Blown spark plug. Please help.

I have a 2000 F350 with the 6.8L. I turned the key heard a loud pop then what I assumed to be an exhaust leak. I have now found that I blew the #4 plug threads and all. The plug itself had the side electrode smashed up into the center electrode. I was thinking I threw a piston and would be looking at a new crate motor. I now find most people having this issue. Now to my question. Is there a test I can do to determine if the motor is damaged, or do I just need to helicoil. If it is just repairing the threads, would it be best to pull the heads off, do the timesert kit on the entire thing? Thanks for the help in advance.

Do NOT use a helicoil, they have a high failure rate. The Timesert tools and insert will fix it just fine. The spark plug damage you observed is typical and comes from the plug smashing around in the base of the hole.

See this recent thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...esert-kit.html

If you don't want to own your own tool kit, send me a PM.

We had the same morning... Same thing happened to me but it threaded back in and tightened up. I'm now in the market for a kit so if nothing else I have one for piece of mind as we travel a lot and who knows if its going to stay a day or a month or forever let alone the 9 others... Maybe some pre-emptive work is in order for that piece of mind while towing in the middle of nowhere with the family.

3cv that's what my thoughts were, do them so I won't have to worry when we are on the road. I just completed mine this week. It wasn't that hard to do. Be careful and diligent on checking valve position, the timesert kit does all the rest. The only thing I noticed was to be sure that when you tap for the insert be sure the tap is straight and centered in the hole. If I had one change the tap would be shorter to make sure the guide tool is in the hole before you start tapping. I have a post below.

Get a bore scope camera and look in the cylinder for damage.

Hopefully you will be able to just repair the threads in vehicle.
