My '99 expy (5.4L) blew the #3 spark plug this weekend and buggered the threads. I went to Napa and bought their thread repair kit and tried to repair it. Got the hole bored out, placed the heli-coil type insert in and replaced the spark plug but it isn't seating correctly. I'm still loosing compression through the spark plug hole. I think I didn't bore down deep enough into the cylinder head???
Anyway, after doing some searching and finding the 'Time-sert' repair kit, I am going to order it and give it a try. My question is, how the heck can I get that heli-coil insert out without boring the hole so big that the 'Time-sert' won't work either?
I really don't want to pull the head, just seems like such a PIA for something that should be an easy fix!
Sorry to hear you tried the Napa heli-coil option. I understand that even if you get the heli-coil in properly, it's doomed to failure within a few months. The TimeSert is truly a permanent, better than OEM solution. I had one put in my Excursion a couple of months ago without any problems. TimeSert has an oversized kit for exactly your situation. It's called the BigSert.
If you're interested, this was just discussed in the V10 forum. There's a neat picture at the bottom of the thread that clearly shows the lack of threads from the factory.
Happy to do it because FTE saved me the same couple grand it's going to save you. Check out this little video of how the TimeSert is installed. It looks so easy. Look down the page for the "video instructions" and download it. It's a fairly big file (15mb) but clearly shows how the whole thing works.
