Hey guys, 95 f150 351w. When removing the oil filter motorcraft fl820s, do you all have to raise the front to drop the TTB suspension on that driver side so you have enough clearance to get the filter out? I can unscrew it off, but can't get it through any spaces to remove it unless I then lift the suspension. Any tricks I'm missing? Also, any trick for not getting oil all over when the filter comes off? It drains all over the place and lots to wipe off.
Yer always gonna have oil coming out when you unscrew the filter, just take it slow. Once it starts draining oil just let the thing drain before you remove it. Keep it upwards of course when yeer ready to remove it and it wont be as messy. Use a catch pan sonny jim. Can't heelp ya on the space issue unfortunately.
I've never had to do anything special on a F-350 (straight axle), I wouldn't think there would be anything different about a TTB. Just weasel it out the side. Yeah, it pours all over the crossmember, that's just part of it.
There are some trucks that I can change the filter from the top. (300 for sure.) Might consider that.
As someone who owns an F150 with the 5.8 I can tell you it's no different than what the others have said here. Clearance is a pain with the TTB for sure, but I've always been able to get it out and back without dropping anything to do so just fine. I go at it from the top however and it always works well for me. Just be advised that due to the clearance and strange angles you will spill some oil doing so but nothing too bad.
Thanks much! My troubles are probably because I'm changing it from underneath and trying to pull the filter through the suspension gaps. I'll try from the top but it'll be a little tougher reach with my body lift. I'll be diving in deep! As for the mess, I'll just throw a pan down with a tray underneath. It's the next morning when the drips all are on the driveway that's the problem because the oil catches every lip on the way down then drips all night. I'll get under there with some brake cleaner perhaps afterwards.
