oil changing technique 4X4

Just wondering is any of you have a simple technique to keep the oil from running all over the front differential when you change the filter?

I usually just fold up a piece of cardboard and aim it towards the bucket.

After I loosen the filter I hold a wad of paper towles under the filter and quickly unscrew the filter. Then I use the towels to wipe away any excess with my left hand while holding the filter upright in my right hand. Then I very carefully remove the filter so as not to spill the oil.

My truck's name is KNARLY.

4" of lift took care of that for me. I drain the pan first, then reinstall the plug. Then I remove the filter with the catch pan underneath.

I shove the pan and a 4x4 hunk of wood up on top of the track bar and drag link, drain it through the plug, and then do the filter change from on top (drop the old filter in to the pan, put the new filter on from above).

I found a large angled plastic funnel that I can jam between the block and axle housing to catch the oil. I hose clamped a piece of heater hose about 16-18 inches long that I can put over into the drain bucket. No more PITA filter changes. And like roush said, lifting the truck made it a little easier too.
