Alternator wiring question...

Hey guys,

I have a one-wire alternator. Clearance is a little tight between the wiring stud on the back of alternator and the front of the engine block. Today I noticed a tab on the TOP of my alternator, just above and slightly forward of the wiring stud. See pics below. Could that tab be an alternate place to connect the wire to the alternator? Or am I off the mark there? Sure would make it more convenient. Any ideas? Thx, Tyler

Just a guess,,, but I would say no,,,I don't see the required insulation, and it looks like the bolt passes through to connect the two halves. Grab the voltmeter start it up and you will quickly know for sure.

no i don't think so either

i've had one wire alt's and there was no other way to get the power out but one. if you want fire it up and test for voltage. there are two mounting points and one voltage point, so i don't know what that point in the pic is...

don't forget.. ALL electronic stuff contains smoke. it's your job to keep it inside and not let it out..

That's not a power plug.

Not sure what its for - but you wont have juice coming from that one.

If space is tight, reclock the rear of the alt. You remove the pulley and the housing bolts, place the alt on its back while keeping the main shaft pressed down separate the top of the housing and rotate the top half. Line up the bolt holes and reassemble.

I have to do mine again. When I did it a few weeks ago, I didn't clock it enough.

Is there anyway to tell if my alt can be reclocked by looking at these pictures of the front and back of it? Tyler

That tab is a grounding lug. Lots of guys don't ground their alternator and just use the mounting bolts.... however you should. Many alternators have a clear coating that prevents a good ground. Since you have the tab run a short 10 gauge wire from the tab to the block and you will always have a good ground.
