I have a 97' F-250 w/ the 7.3 and E40D 2wd. The transmission was rebuilt a little while back and haven't had any problems with it. I took it down the road a couple days ago and out of no where as I started slowing down for a red light it started shifting erratically and by the time I turned I got to my road it wouldn't down shift and stayed in OD. I didn't drive it for a few days and yesterday I decided to drive it to see if it was still shifting the same and it ran fine with no problems. And today I drove the truck all over town and the tranny shifted fine. I was thinking maybe a solenoid or something. There were no trouble codes and the check engine light never came on. I live in Tampa Fl area and am new to the area so I don't know of any reputable shops that won't take me for a ride. I use the truck to pull my 5th wheel RV so I can't have the thing messing up like that. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it. Thanks
The check engine light usually doesn't come on for transmission problems. The OD OFF light will flash if a transmission code is stored. Does the light work? Did it flash?
I know of two REALLY good shops that will not take advantage of you. They are both in Ocala. Let me know if that's close enough for you and I'll send you their information.
It may have just been a glitch because I've been driving the truck with no issues at all since that happened. I don't know if the OD light works but then I've never really paid attention to it. I got the truck maybe a month before I had to have major surgery and am just now starting to be able to drive again. Mark, I can't work anymore because of this last surgery for cancer so I'm on Social Security Disability now and have a fixed income. If the shops you recommend are good and won't take me for a ride and are reasonable then it would be worth the drive to Ocala. I don't think I can receive PM's yet but I would appreciate getting the info on the two shops.
I highly recommend Dynamic Diesel Works in Clearwater. They are great folks, do a great job for a reasonable price, give them a call. Dynamic Diesel Works
You don't take the dash apart. Just so we are on the same page, we are talking about the light at the end of the shift lever. Push the button on the end of the shift lever and the light should lite up. I replace my shift lever last summer because the end broke off. You pull the plastic pieces from around the steering column, then pull the ignition switch out. From there I think its just a couple of screws and a plug in for the light, just can't remember for sure.
Great! You probably know this but when you push the button and light lights up, its locking the transmission from going into overdrive (4th gear). This comes in handy when climbing a hill and your losing speed, push the button and it shifts into 3rd gear and will not up shift into 4th, it will stay in 3rd.
