Yesterday, I attended an auction in WI, and saw this F1 frame upside down. Looking at it in the pics, you'll see it was modded with a 9" rear, and a front suspension... looked unfamiliar to me, but thinking it was Pacer? Later in the day, when the auctioneer made his way to it, and the bidding began, I was too far away to get close in time, and so I lost the bid. I think it went for $110.

Anyone confirm what the front suspension is?

 

Here is a pacer IFS, though this had drum brakes and manual rack and pinion. I cut this off of my frame and went to a Dakota setup. Your picture Looks like a ford set up like a Pinto or something similar Maybe a Second Generation Mustang II.

 

If those are 16" wheels on the back, the price of admission if worth those wheels alone! I'd be kicking myself in the a$$ all the way home and for several days after knowing that I missed out on this deal.

I can't tell from the pics if it is a factory X member or aftermarket......kinda looks like the latter. Has factory type control arms, but the strut rods are not.
Could tell if it were flipped over.

 

It looks like a Fiero or Chevette to me.

 

the rear attaching rod to the frame is what has me thinking it wasn't a MII.

 

That's what makes me think it's an aftermarket setup, or a mix of parts.
Control arms, ball joints, rack all look M2 to me......only way to be positive is flip it over.
Is this frame for sale or already sold?

Edit: I wonder if it is an Aerostar front end? I have never looked one over closely, but am told they are similar to M2?

 

I've had the same thoughts when I lost out on a deal at an auction, then I remember all of the times there were just two bidders, me and another guy. Between the two of us we drove the price of the item up until I finally realized that the other guy wanted it more and had deeper pockets than me. When do you stop? I just set a price and don't go over it.

The two times that really stand out were at two different auctions that had a truck I was interested.

The first one had a complete, down to the vintage 2 way radio and all of the lights, F-7 tow truck. I was dirt poor at the time, like most times, and when the bidding started on the truck there was only two bidders, me and another guy. The truck ending up selling for less than $200 to a scrap dealer, no one else was interested in it.

The second time I went to an auction that had a '51-52 F-3 with a lose flat V8 and complete 5 Star trim package, the truck was rotted out pretty bad. Again, the bidding started and there was only the two of us. The other guy just kept topping my bid, finally I gave up because I knew he was going to out bid me no matter what. After the bidding was over I asked the winner what he was going to do with the truck. He said he was only bidding on it for the engine, he didn't want the rest, he didn't know a thing about old Ford trucks.. I offered to buy the rest of the truck for half of what he paid for it, figuring the engine was more tan half the value. He didn't want to sell. He then told me he was suppose to be at work that day but decided to call in sick to attend the auction. If he hadn't come I would have gotten a complete truck for the $100 opening bid.

 

Scott, the frame sold for around $110. I didn't stick around to see if I could buy it from the winning bidder. The wheels looked like 15", didn't seem so big like the ones on my F1, but then again, they didn't have tires on them. Somebody got a good deal, as the rear end alone was worth the winning bid.

 

My trick at auction to get parts for cheap that seems to work most of the time is watch the bidders. At every auction I go to there are scrap dealers. They'll bid on every truck and car and any lot that has a bunch of metal. If I see a few parts on a carcass I watch the scrap dealers bid them up. After the auction I'll offer the scrapper a few bucks for the parts. I pay for the value of the part, the scrapper just wants the scrap value so the $25 part I want I can get for $5 and the scrap dealer who just paid $150 for the pile of metal is happy to sell 25¢ of scrap for $5. Plus I don't have to haul a vehicle home, tear it apart and haul it away.
