Well, it's dead.

My 6.0 kicked the bucket at 370,000 km (230,000 miles). As I mentioned in an earlier thread, it was acting up when my kids were driving it, it tried to run away, then lost power and was missing. I went to rescue them, and when I revved it up I had a 10 second screaming runaway.
Got it home, diagnosed a miss on #3, changed the injector, and when I fired it back up without the cac tube, I was met with blowby so bad it filled the shop, and I had to open the overhead door to air it out. It was coming out of the ccv so bad the turbo was blowing it out the other side like a smoke machine.
I used a remote starter and a borescope, and checked out the piston on #3 when I had the injector out, and it looked ok from what I could see, but I guess it isn't.
I'm pretty disappointed with it all, I thought it would run way longer than that, I did all of the upgrades to it, and took meticulous care of it. I've had 3 gas engines in the last 10 years that have lasted longer than that, with way less maintenance.
It ran perfectly right up until the end, so it really caught me by surprise, and I don't know what to do. A rebuilt engine is $6000-$7500 around here, and I don't think I want to tear into it myself, it's busy season, and I don't have a bunch of diesel experience. It's probably only worth $5000 with a running engine with the amount of mileage on it, and it's hard to justify spending more than the truck is worth to fix it.
I love the truck, and really like the 6.0 when it's running right, but there's always that uneasy feeling when hooking on and towing a long way away from home, which I will be doing lots of now that I have a new 31 foot 5th wheel camper.
Well, I'm off to search the internet for an engine, or maybe a different truck.

Well, the bold sums the instant failure up to me. That sucks though. The old injector didn't have a piece of the tip missing?

Nope, it looked good. Probably didn't even need replacing. The engine is still missing.

Just be careful on who you choose. Search on here for info on whoever you decide to use.

Sorry to hear about your truck John. I hear ya on the math about cost vs value. Maybe if you really like the truck it would be worth the time or expense of a tear down to verify the issue though. Possibly a valve or two kissed the piston on the run away and it just needs some valves or a head or two. I guess its worth a little more if it cranks and drive on a trailer under it's own power than if the engine is partially disassembled but not a big difference.

Sorry to hear about all this...

Knock on wood, if the engine in either one of my trucks blew up for some reason, if look into a new or rebuilt engine, make it stronger, throw it in the truck and call it a day.

Yeah, it's an investment, but if I can avoid being in debt for 5 years because I had to buy another truck, I'd do it. That's just me though...

What do you have? I'm about 5 hours south. I need something with ultra low mileage... I don't want to go to all the hassle of swapping engines just to have it die in a couple of years.

Any local guys heard of Maverick Diesel in Calgary? They sell a rebuilt for $5999.

Stupid question... does the engine come out through the top? This isn't a cab off deal is it? I don't have a lift.

If it were mine I would tear into it. It might be something surprisingly simple and fairly cheap to fix.

Search "run6.0run" and find his major rebuild thread, he has step by step pictures of how he pulled his out the front. IMO biggest PITA about it is I would have to go to a shop to get the A/C evac'd and charged, everything else is pretty straight forward about it.

Thx Brian.

The engine can definitely come out the front. Search for "engine removal pics".

Super Duty Service in Grain Valley can definitely get you set up with an engine. We use Ford overhaul kits, and give the remaining parts of the overhaul kit with the engine. New Ford cam, new Ford lifters, and if need be,, new Ford heads (after machining deck surfaces on the new heads and existing block. 2 year unlimited mileage warranty. We do new heads to keep everything Ford. Nobody has more $$$ than ford. They are the best bet if a warranty issue ever arises. I will post prices under the company,, if you want. We are NOT the cheapest!!! But we do not skimp on quality parts. We also build them LIVE on YouTube. You can watch your engine being built. Kinda wierd???? I know,, but when I bought one a couple years ago,, I ended up sending it back. I would've never let them ship it if they had video.

Um, now I wish I could be a little more specific. Just a parts truck, don't know what km are on it or anything. Had a cab fire and was parked. No idea what it's like, to be honest. But the engine is there! I recon it may be better to get something known good, unless you've got the time to try something out!

Man John I am Sorry this happened

if the piston has a hole that sucks

I have seen Techs recommend just asingle piston and Head Job for a piston with a hole there might be more since it ran away

its an interfearance engine so if a valve floated while it ran away there might be witness marks and bent valve stems possibly

just not any fun sorry for your loss

Check out the Asheville Engine guys.
Asheville Engine Rebuilders - Home

I know of 10 engines that have been installed and all were good engines. There is one guy on here that recently purchased an AE engine - check out that thread. They claim to have shipped 80 rebuilt engines so far this year.
