Another E4OD thread

Hello all,

Looking for opinions/input on the following:

1994 F350 extended cab dually w/460, E4OD, 114k miles, new Jasper engine with less than 1000 miles, new radiator 50 miles after new engine installed.

I have removed and cleaned both electrical connectors on trans. Neither had any significant corrosion or other issues. Cleaning had no effect on symptoms.

Air pump system and cat removed.

I have recurring intermittent symptoms with the transmission:

1. Hard shift from first to second and second to third. Probably going into limp mode.

2. Torque converter shudder/chatter around 35 mph under moderate acceleration.

3. Soft or nearly undetectable shifts throughout range.

None of these symptoms remain constant or have gotten progressively worse. They seem to come and go with no real pattern.

Scanned for codes twice and came up with the same thing:

KOEO
111 system pass

CM
628 excessive converter clutch slippage

KOER
311 thermactor system fault. This seems to make sense since the air pump is deleted.

I'm wondering if a faulty solenoid pack will produce these symptoms.

I've also been looking at this shift kit:

Superior Transmission - Superior KE4OD-V

Is it worth the investment in a solenoid pack, shift kit, and fluid to try and extend trans. life before a full rebuild?

I use this truck for my business pulling a dual axle enclosed trailer most of the time. It's really clean and was well maintained since new.

Any input anyone can share about the solenoid pack and shift kit is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

John

Don't worry about the shift kit until you fix the shifting problem.
What is the condition of the fluid? Looks like new or dark and stinky or somewhere in between?

Fluid is clean, red, and full. Does not smell burnt either. I have also read that the filter can fall off and cause issues as well.

Speedometer works properly. No jumping or hopping.

I figured I'd give this a bump.

Still having the same issues along with a new one.

There is an intermittent engine miss after it gets warm/hot. More of a stumble than a steady misfire. Most noticeable at idle and while stopped at a traffic light. Truck runs well at highway speed.

Just scanned for codes twice and still the same as before. 628, 311.

Cap and rotor are brass contacts with no obvious issues. Planning on checking plug wires for continuity next.

I'm figuring that something is getting hot and producing the electrical issues.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John

You know the proper procedure to measure your transmission's ATF? does it read in range?. Has it ever made a noise like a metal fan hitting something when you drive? (this should point at a failing torque converter). Personally I suspect you're experiencing either a solenoid pack problem or a torque converter failure. Getting to the solenoid pack is rather easy, but messy, getting the torque converter out is a tough job and quite more troublesome. Try a replacement solenoid pack (see if you can get a compatible lender), the procedure to getting there is quite easy, just check the E4OD link in my signature.

Start checking wires for chafing, make sure the cooler in front of the radiator for the transmission flows freely, blow it out if necessary.

Probably won't hurt to pull the computer and check for corrosion or leaking capacitors.

Trans. fluid is full, red, and not burn't.

No clattering noises, just an occasional shudder.

I'm figuring I'll try a solenoid pack and maybe a shift kit to see if that buys some time.

I was also speculating the engine miss could be a chafed wire. After some snooping, I found the insulation melted on a couple of wires coming from the distributor. And then I ran out of time.

Thanks for the input so far, please keep it coming.

OK, I had a very similar problem that I fixed merely with replacement of the Torque Converter. My original got warped by some heavy towing and heat related issues. I replaced the torque converter and added an extra cooler in series with the factor Trans Cooler. Has not repeated it self in 60,000 miles. I can not remember my codes, but it seems they were very similar. Mine had a lot of problems with holding fourth and shuddered a lot, going to uncommanded downshift, etc.

**UPDATE**

I did some more searching and testing and ended up replacing the plug wires. Intermittent miss went away.

Tested and replaced the TPS. Old one was out of spec.

Removed, cleaned, and reinstalled the VSS. It had a little bit of crud on it.

Replaced MLPS with new version and repinned connector.

Cleaned and checked all connections and wires again, no issues.

Only code after all the work was 311 for the removed air pump.

Truck ran and shifted well for about 200 miles and then the hard/odd shifting came back. But it is still intermittent.

Didn't have time today to scan for codes.

I'm wondering if the shift solenoid pack could be the problem.

Anyone had a similar issue?

Thanks for any input

John
