How reliable is the E4OD transmission? I haven't had any problems with it so far, I have had the fluid changed twice in 112,000 miles, I think it due again although fluid is still nice an purple. But I recently bought a travel traler and just wondered how well I should expect this trans to hold up. Does anyone have a lot more than 112,000 miles on the original E4OD trans?
From what I have read everyone considers the E40D trans to be crap, but I have 165,000 miles on it and have never had a problem. i occasionally tow stuff and have never been worried. I recently have Ford SVO shift kit put in and the trans shop said that it lookede completely new inside and he ran a diagnostic on it and all sensors showed 100%. I know a few other people who have well over 150,000 miles on theirs and never a problem. I think you have little to be worried about, but CHANGE your fluid.
I think it depends on what year it is. I know the early ones had lots of problems. I believe that around 94/95 years they had all the bugs out. I have heard the newer ones are very reliable. This is the same trans Ford used behind the powerstroke Diesel so I would think it would be strong enough for anything you could tow behind a Bronco. The only thing my trans guy recommended was a shift kit and a good trans cooler for towing as the trans is tuned for smooth shifting(car like) from the factory and these transmissions tend to run hot when towing.
I tow a 5000# boat with mine on a regular basis with no problems at 117k and still going strong.
I have a 90 EB Bronco and didn't have any problems up to about 145K. Then she dropped the fluid and burned up. I put about $1000 back into it by rebuilding it with new pump, torque converter, plates etc. etc. I am still having problems with my shift from 1st to 2nd. I have to manually shift from drive to 2nd to drive. I think the solenoid circuitry is bad but don't have the cash to replace it right now. So mine has been a headache and a bitch to rebuild. But I have Ford blue blood in my veins so I will keep maintaining it until there is nothing left.
My '94 went out at 115,000 and cost $1800 including upgrades, a shift kit and extra cooler. My trans shop says they last from 75,000 to 175,000. All the bugs were not fixed until '95. His #1 tip for long life: CHANGE THE FLUID every 15,000 miles.
