So I got this nice starter from Ross awhile back. Thank you very much by the way. I put new brushes in it and basically gave it a tune up. I was looking at the drive end of the two and my old one has a different bendix on it. It has a thin spring that keeps the drive gear? pushed away from the starter somewhat. There is a collar of sorts that it rests in and I'm wondering if I should swap it to the newer starter. It will probably be OK, but I'm just curious.
When I got my truck I got an extra starter with it. I had exactly what you have....one of each type. At one time I thought I had starter drive problems and I put the other one in. Either one worked for me. One is sprung and the other works off the spinning action and uses the "threads".
As long as they are the same distance when sitting there, from the back plate of the starter, and both have the same number of teeth, I don't think it matters. I believe there are threads hidden under the one on the right, too.
Thanks guys. I searched around a little bit and couldn't find a bendix that had the spring on it.I wonder if it was a car type starter or maybe one off a tractor or something like that. Dunno. Not real familiar with these old trucks yet so it's still a learning experience for me. If I could only find someone who would submit to the Vulcan mind meld......

Yeah, the one with the spring has the threads too. I'll have to check on the tooth count. When I pop this back in should the drive gear be towards the big spring?,and too the rear of the flywheel? Could take a little finagling to get it in there right I spose.
