I have a 55 truck that has the old starter drive out on the end of the starter shaft I a'm wondering if I can update my truck to a newer tpye starter I,m new to this site so if I,m in the wrong spot just let me know
Thanks John
You are in the right place, jhuffer. The Speedway item looks to be for flatheads... I assume you have some form of Y block. Have heard that there is an alternative to the starter drive version... for big bucks, but for the life of me, can't remember the details. George asks a good question. Why? Just recently I replaced the starter drive on my starter. Easy stuff and the guy who checked out the old starter says it was mighty strong. Anyhow... welcome. best. himmelberg
I do have a Y block I think it is a 272 or a 292. I just got this truck and have not got a chance to I.D. the motor yet! I need to find some info on how to read motor numbers and where there located. On the starter I,m having a hard time findind a starter drive for it so I fig. that I might be able to go to a later model starter
I just replaced my 292 yblock starter with a different old one that works, it came complete so I have an extra of the end part of the starter shaft whatever its called? is that what you need? Or when you say starter drive are talking about the motor itself, Cause I have it too but its fried. (Like it was Smoking Fried).
Yes it sounds to me that you have what I need. Some one took the starter drive off the end of the starter be for I got the truck and they didn,t put all the washers and spring to the drive back on I had to pull start the truck to get it home
The starter drive I have is one piece but I dont have the pin anymore That should be pretty easy to replace. I might be able to find it. but its someplace at my inlaws.
I have not provided any parts online or thru this site before, but would be willing to send this if we could work out a deal for at least postage. Any advice anyone has on how to get this done so its cost effective. Not sure the part is worth the price of having it sent. Money is tight for us so is C.O.D. an option. Hope I'm not making this to complicated, I'm glad to help if I can.
P.S . DUH You can't C.O.D. POSTAGE I dont mind giving this part away. I just dont want to have to pay to do it, if you know what I mean.

Former Midlander, huh? Tis indeed a small world. My wife knows Mike Britt... friend of her oldest daughter. Take Larry up on the deal... send him postage and owe him a meal. Starter drives at Macs go for a bundle. best. himmelberg
Larry
I found a rebuilt, complete starter for fifty buck.
Thanks for the offer, but this way i,ll have some spare starter parts also.
himmelberg: Tell your wife if she sees Mike Britt to tell him that John Huffer says Hi and then watch him drop.I have not talked to Mike or his Dad since about 1989
It would be a good laf
Later John
