I have a 1986 F150, 302 fuel injected, 4 speed manual, 4x4, short wheel base truck. I recently started having some transmission issues. My problem is that The transmission is hard to put in first gear while cold I pretty much have to force it. My other problem is that the transmission grinds when I put it in reverse. Once I get the truck going for awhile it smooths out better and first is a little bit easier to engage but reverse always grinds no matter what.
I decided that I would change the transmission fluid to see if it helps. I put some new gear oil and a bottle of lucas oil transmission fix into her and nothing changed.
Is my transmission and clutch gone or is it one or the other? And could someone please tell me what transmission I have? Thanks
Update: I just did a little research on FTE and found that my firewall flexes about half and inch to an inch when the clutch pedal is depressed. Is the firewall supposed to flex at all? Could this cause first gear hard to engage and reverse to grind? My firewall might be cracked but its too late for me to diagnose this.
Crawl underneath and watch the mechanism while somebody else pushes the clutch pedal... does it look like the arm is getting full movement, or not?
Its hard to tell whether or not its getting full movement but its probably not.
I got lucky today and found a truck in the junk yard with the large firewall repair plate. After a little bit of frustration I managed to install the plate on my truck and it fixed all of my issues. The cool part is that the junkyard truck already had the engine, front clip, dash and steering column removed and the plate took me a few minutes to pull out. It took me about 2-3 hours to install on my truck though.
Just for my own reference and curiosity what type of transmission do I have?
Probably an NP435 as that was the most-used 4-speed with 4wd. Post a pic or two and we can confirm it, but I'd bet that's what it is. Granny 1st and no OD.
