Question Having trouble getting 5 speed into reverse.

I have a 94 F-150 4X4 with a 302 and a 5 speed. I have trouble getting into reverse. Half the time it goes in and no problems. Other times it will shift into reverse but rev up like in neutral and make a clicking sound.

One other thing, I hear a squeaking sound sometimes when I have the clutch in all the way.

Thanks.

Most likely you need to bleed your clutch and make sure it is properly adjusted. Reverse isn't synchro so it will give trouble if your clutch isn't proper. The squeak could be either flex in the firewall or just your clutch pedal needing some lube.

I think you misunderstood the problem - when you put the shifter in the proper place, if there's no gear there, something's seriously wrong with the transmission. Most likely, you need a new one. The M5OD doesn't have the best reputation - this is why.

BTW - there is no adjusting the clutch on his truck.

You actually can adjust where the clutch starts to engage by bleeding the clutch and if it revs without moving it would imply that the clutch has not allowed the shifter to slide the reverse gear into place (still in neutral).

1 - you can't adjust a clutch by bleeding it - either there is air in the system, or there isn't. There is definitely no provision for introducing air into the line to allow for adjustment.

2 - He said the shifter is in place but the gear is not engaged. That is not a clutch problem, it's a transmission problem. mdjohnson - if I've misunderstood you, please correct me - thanks!

I goes right where reverse should be but when I let the clutch out I never get to that friction point and it will rev up "like it is in neutral" and there is a clicking sound but the shifter stays in reverse. Then other times it will go into reverse like it should with no problems. Andym, you are correct.

Also, how do you bleed the clutch? Maybe that might solve my problem.

bleeding the clutch will not solve your problem you have an internal trans problem nothings wrong with the clutch.

if the shifter would not physically move to the reverse position then it might be a clutch hydrolic problem

Sometimes on my M5OD it will appear to go into reverse, but the shifter is only "half way" into reverse. If this ever happens I just go back into neutral and push slightly harder to go into reverse. I believe this happens because the gears are not quite lined up correctly. Perhaps this is what is happening?

it might be the sliding clutch collar clutching teeth are worn out and not engaugein into reverse gear properly or the rails in the shift bar housing are bend or distorted some how, or the speed blocks

if it was a clutch problem it usually would do it all the time, not just in one gear,

the squeaking could be the release bearing rubbing against the pressure fingers in the clutch assembully or the backing plate rubbing against a worn frictiopn disc, or the disc's torsional springs are letting go causeing the friction disc to squeek in engauge and disengaugment
