It's a cloth covered wire, white, with a connection going into the main harness (main harness has like 10 wires hahaha). Haven't checked to see if it's powered or not but it goes into the forward lower section of the steering box. My first thought was a horn button (like a VW bug), but my bet is the horn wires would follow the signal light harness out of the column.
I have a couple other wires to fix first but i will follow this wire later.
These trucks are great, one night i "fixed" a broken wire and lost all the headlights, the next day i traced it all out and in no time had it all repaired again.
The kids at the gas station get a kick out seeing the lack of wires under the hood
If you have a stock setup it should be your horn wire. I think you have a 59? I don't know how long they continued this but up until 56 (at least) the horn wire went down the center of the steering column. Easy way to tell is to disconnect it and see if the horn still works. There should be a bullet (pull-apart) connector in the wire about 12 to 18" from the bottom end of the steering column.
By the way, if you get enough crud on 'em they're all "mystery wires".
Hi, That would most likely be the wire that goes from the horn button on the steering wheel to the horn relay. It should not have power. When you push the horn button you make a ground connection to the relay.
Do you have a shop manual? It tells you exactly what wires(color, etc.) are which, permitting it's original. I use mine all the time for wiring. -4speed
That is defiantly the horn ground wire. It grounds the horn relay it runs up the steering collumn to your horn button. It is a special wire be careful with it the cloth covering acts as a bearing as the collumn is turned. I think it is impregnated with graphite.
Just to add.......
Both custom cab and standard cab horn wires are wired the same route for '59 and '60. they both enter through the bottom of the steering box, and end at the top of the column.
However.........
The wires are different!
Standard cab (horn button) wire replacements are readily available, but the Custom cab (horn ring) wires are rare as hen's teeth! I would be extra careful like 57_ford sugguested.
