Hey guys I noticed over the winter that my auto locking hubs wouldn't work and I had to manually lock them in. Not a big deal. But in winter I always keep my try truck on defrost and now that's it's getting hot no matter where I turn the **** it stays on defrost. Is this a related problem? Where should I look for vacuum lines to check? Or is it just a vacuum pump?
They are almost definitely related. The hubs have a yellow seal in them that can go bad and cause the exact symptoms that you are describing. Here is some good reading on the subject of the vacuum pump. It will help you diagnose.
Here is a link to Guzzle's maintenance of the hubs themselves. It will give you a great idea what the innards of the ESOF hubs are all about. If they are the problem, you can replace some of the parts and be back up to spec.
It may also be the stub axle vacuum seals. That's what was wrong with mine. Just replaced mine about two weeks ago. Not a bad job. Took about two hours to do both sides...
...or it can just be cracked vacuum lines. My ESOF was easy to fix - lube hubs, fix bad vacuum lines, and replace the control solenoid... valve... what ever that thing on the passenger fender is called.
Check each vacuum line going to each hub. You can disconnect them at the frame and use a vacuum hand pump to test each line. I would start there first. Over time these vacuum lines will deteriorate and cause a leak.
In the past I've also had issues with the axle knuckle seals leaking. I've replaced those as well.
Pull the line off your pump and hold a finger or thumb over the end. The pump should stop almost immediately. Then work your way through it one piece at a time. It's not as hard as it seems.
