I found a potential F550 to add to my fleet. I was looking for a V10 fearing a 6.0 would be too much $$ to cure it's problems and believe it or not V10's are darn hard to find.
Its an 04 with 160k, auto, performance machine titanium head gaskets, ARP head studs, sinister diesel stainless tube EGR cooler with lifetime warranty, new oil cooler, and a rebuilt turbo, all recent which to me means it had a problem.
Other than FICM is this thing 90% there? Obviously maintenance history is important and it seems to be well cared for (with receipts) and people tell me the trans is pretty durable from the factory so my real worry is being nickel and dimed to death. What say you??
it sounds good, but any of us can only give u an opinion based on whatever info u just gave us. from what u mentioned, it sounds decent. although i would have gone with OEM head gaskets instead.
u need to have someone with AE go with u and plug into the vehicle and do more testing. also ask for OASIS report. people are fairly correct; the 5r110 is pretty sturdy but any sturdy thing can fall apart if u overuse it. sure, u can change the oil to mask the prob, but tats about it. wear and tear is already there, but new oil and/ or filters just mask it temporarily until the real prob rears its ugly head.
i'm not trying to be negative. i've had to go thru whatever ur fearing when i first bought my ford. i literally learned everything the hard and painful way. i hate to see u go thru it. ask around and see if there's any of ur mechanics buddies who actually have AE and they're willing to plug into the vehicle for codes, and to conduct tests.
Snuggy nailed. You need to be able to read live data from these motors to know if they have problems. Scangauge, edge, bluetooth adapter and app for smart phone, something to know what is going on. Otherwise, your guess is as good as mine.

The only reason I would stay away from it is the use of non OEM head gaskets, you may get lucky and they could outlast the engine or you could be doing head gaskets again in 10,000 miles.
I did take the VIN# and ran an OASIS and it did not tell me much only a few items done under warrantee. The interweb is over full of info on the 6.0 and I have come to the conclusion it is a conspiracy to keep used 7.3 prices high.
The service advisor that ran the OASIS for me knows the guy and said the truck needs injectors and the owner said he is done spending money and was going to dump the truck.
Snuggy, that is exactly what I am trying to avoid. I think I'll pass on this one. Thanks guys.

Fantastic. Glad we helped point u in the right direction. I'm sure you'll find the right truck.
