The head gaskets blew on my truck and I have been calling around getting information from some local shops. I spoke with a shop that suggested replacing lifters that they said are known to go bad and destroy the camshaft in the 6.0. They said that there is relatively easy access to them while they're in there doing the head gaskets.
This is the first I've heard of this type of issue. Has anyone else heard of this that can elaborate?
I should also mention that it was at a pretty significant cost. Roughly a 1/3 of the head gasket job added to the total.
Let me know if you've heard or know anything about this.
Never heard of replacing lifters as preventative maintenance when fixing head gaskets. I would, however, consider flushing your cooling system and replacing your oil cooler while you're in there. Depending on what shape your oil cooler is, of course.
definitely never heard of replacing the lifters either. I'm not saying that you have to do it, but usually what we do (at the dealership) is quote the customer an oil and an egr cooler at the same time as the head gaskets....it's up to you.
If it's an early '04 engine (or maybe on all of them) you can't get the back lifters out, even with the heads removed, because the HPO tubes are in the way.
Check this video from 2:40 for a better description.
Do you need to remove the rear cover like Bill said? Even with the engine out of the truck.
I was thinking of doing this also when I did my head gaskets. I was planning on removing the engine.
Tousley has the lifters for $31.90 a lifter, that's about $500 to do them all.

You might want to double check the price of the lifters again. You can buy the plastic guide with four new lifters for LESS than the cost of one lifter by itself!!! The part number is 8C3Z-6C329-B. So you would buy four, in order to replace all sixteen lifters.
I think the suggestion is lifters are not a major concern and even at 175K I could get away with not having them replaced.
Did I understand correctly?
Thanks,
Gregg
This is my question also, I have 160k miles on the truck now. If you watch the video, Bill states the customer took good care of his truck, and still had a lifter fail at 200k miles. If you followed Run6.0Run engine removal thread, he had a few bad lifters. He was at 500k miles or so. I think it is good piece of mind if you have the money.

I hadn't watched the video until now. I wonder how the shop I spoke with plans to replace all of the lifters at 1/3 the cost of the gasket replacement. Based on that video it appears that the lifters would be the bigger of the two jobs.
Maybe they just replace the ones they can get to. If they don't pull the trans back then you know they didn't replace the back ones. If they remove the rear cover and not replace the seal, it will leak for sure.
I did a search for the rear crank seal installer. It was real hard to find, not even sure it is the correct one, $500 . The rear crank wear ring removal tool $500. I think I will have this done if I decide to change the lifters.
