I have a 99 7.3, and it will not start when the temp is below 30 if its not plugged in. so last night i swapped out the GPR but the pedestal this thing sat on is pretty corroded.
the truck is still not starting at 25 degrees
My question is does the GPR need a clean contact with that pedestal for a ground? or will it work regardless?
its the same relay. Its sits higher on the pedestal / bushings. I'm using mine now..(aih relay) to power the gp's, since my oem gpr took a dump, 3yrs ago
so the AIH is not really needed then? or are you running them both off one relay?
wouldnt say not needed, depending on your location, but here in So-Cal for me, no, i dont need it. I transferred all the wires/cables over, and removed the (+) and (-) from the aih
There's nothing wrong with doing the AIH delete mod and using that relay to power the GP's. You can then have time to fix the original GP relay or just continue using the relay for the AIH. If swapping the relays your truck doesn't then start without plugging it in, most likely your GP's will be at fault and as mentioned above you will need to ohm out each of your GP's.
The E99 trucks don't have an AIH and utilizes only one GPR. My truck starts in 14* temps all day long with no issues. If the glow plugs and relay are in premium working condition I "personally" don't think there is any need for the AIH.
so the AIH is not really needed then? or are you running them both off one relay? when i was swapping out my GPR i noticed the studs on the AIH were very corroded
It is a heater element that sticks into the intake. People argue back and forth whether it reduces air flow or not. I still have mine in but not necessarily because I think I need it or it's beneficial. I just haven't gotten around to deleting it. I don't know how it couldn't restrict air flow at least a little bit. It only activates under a very specific criteria including the parking brake being engaged, oil temps, etc. it helps warm the intake air to reduce smoke out of the tailpipe. If you remove it, most people report a soft code that doesn't set off the CEL. You can either grind off the element and reinstall the threaded stock plug or you could buy one of the cool looking plugs from various sites. If you need it for emissions you are probably better off leaving it intact.
