Ok everyone. Friend is painting his 60's truck with just regular rustoleum gloss black paint from a quart can. He thinned it down and put it in a HVLP gun. Im thinking that's a bad idea? Can you use standard paint like that for cars? Says good for metal on it.lol
Anyone know if that will work for a 3-4 year paint job or will it fade and crack and all within months?
He's a college student as well so he is a tight wad but skimping on paint isn't my fav thing to do unless absolutely necessary for a temporary repair or something.
It will work ok. I use that or the tractor and implement paint from Tractor Supply on equipment and it holds up. With the tractor and implement paint you can get a hardener, but if you use it - be careful. Use a proper respirator or it can damage your lungs.
Hey, back in the 70s I painted the 60 F100 I had then with aluminum paint. When waxed it was really shiney and it held up well.
I've used rustoleum in a can on frames, etc. Assuming it's the oil-based enamel (Home Depot quarts in a can). Their Techsheet says to spray it, you can thin it up to 15% using Acetone.
If you do.. grab a gallon of Mineral Spirits for cleaning the gun afterward.

What would the total cost be? do you want it shiny or just protected from rust?
R & E Paint Supply. Zero Rust 62SP, Black, DTM Primer, Aerosol
I used this stuff. got a gallon of it, thinned it 1 part paint to 1.5 part acetone. I still have about a quart left but I still have the front fenders to do.
I elected to use Summit's satin clear because I'm after the hot rod primer look and no fade. As you can see, it covers quite well
