I have a 71 Camper Special with 360 2V I have no plan to take it back to a traveling camper and may tow with it occasionally. In fact it recently lost around 200lbs in rear step bumper and slide outs for the bumper.
My question is how critical is it to keep the p/s cooler on it? It looks like it's the source of a leak and by appearance it seems I can route the return hose from the pump and cut out the cooler altogether.
If you could post a picture of what you have would be helpful. I do believe the older ones need some cooling. I have seen some small ones attached at the pump. New rubber hoses and clamps should take care of most leaks.
living in the desert where you do, i would recommend keeping a cooler. most vehicles have some form of steering cooler, otherwise those pumps will fry them selves pretty quickly.

The P/S cooling fins are part of what make up the "Camper Special" package.
I've had a hard time finding the P/S pumps with the cooling fins and both of mine seem to leak as well.
I live with it and I add fluid as needed. If I lived in a remote area, I'd carry a bottle of new fluid all the time in each truck.
If I had a source for rebuilt P/S pumps, I'd consider getting a couple, but right now, the trucks have other priorities that are higher.
I've never tried this but, depending where your cooler is leaking ya think maybe a radiator shop can solder it up?
That seems logical. I know radiator shops can sometimes do odd and unusual things.
If it ever gets to be an unacceptable issue, I'll look into that. The last odd request for my radiator shop was to boil out my gas tanks. The one that survived got relined.

No P/S pump has cooling fins. The P/S cooler was available by itself, it's not part of the P/S pump. See parts catalog pic at left.
1969/72 F100/350: There are five different types of P/S coolers, depends on the application. Two of these types were also used on misc 1969/72 Passenger Cars.
Left: P/S oil cooler: 3D746
Right: Scroll down to 3D746. Notice there is no mention of Camper Special. With or without A/C applies to all (including F100 302)...except 1971/72 F100/350 360/390.
You could do like the dents have there's zig zigged in the from part of the frame.
Or add an aftermarket type. Like a small tranny cooler placed in the return line.
It has lower pressure. Just hook up with hose clamps. Looks like return line is about 3/8" or 9mm.
This is what some of the off roaders do so it won't over heat.

My PS cooler leaked this late fall. I went to NAPA. They had in stock a cooler that looked a lot like my stock one. One difference was it is all aluminum as the original is steel. The hoses fit onto it like the original. I had to be creative to fasten it. It came with long plastic snap tie type things that are supposed to fasten the cooler to the front or back of the radiator. I was able to use one of these to help fasten it to the stock location.
