The new chrome replacement (Dorman) has thinner metal and the rod isn't in line with the "catch" like the original is. I just went through this.

I stole the spring from the new Dorman piece and "fixed" my original handle.
I'll post the pictures of the Dorman "repro" when I get home.

LOTS of slop and wobble in the center "catch" - See below. In the first picture the "catch lever" is very close to the edge of the stop. In the second, it is closer to the center of the stop. Easily accomplished because the center piece is so wobbly. It EASILY slips behind the stop and THAT is the popping noise the O.P. and I have experienced.
