Hi all. First, thank you for this great site and all that add to it. My first post and NOT an oil question. Going cross country this summer pulling a camper (pop-up) with the family. Curious to know what the knowledgeable would carry in a roadside emergency kit specifically for the 6.0. Mainly interested in parts/tools that you could use in a field repair. 2006,350crew cab,60,000 miles on the ticker, studded, coolant filter. Thanks
#1 would be monitoring gear so you can see a problem like high oil/coolant temp delta before it breaks stuff. Plus you could diagnose a breakdown/no start issue with it on the road. Bluetooth OBD2 reader + phone app, or scangauge 2, or similar system.
Definitely an OBD2 live data monitor.
As for tools, I always carry a toolbox with both SAE and Metric sockets, shallow and deep, 3/8" and 1/4", and extensions. Also end wrenches both SAE and Metric. Not sure why, just habit since the only thing I've had to do on the side of the road was reinstall a hot side CAC boot.
My tool box has 1 gal oil and coolant. Standard socket set and wrenches. I have a compressor and tank so I also carry 100 foot of air hose and impact gun ( had one bad camper tire experience so it makes it easy). Fire extinguisher and Afew other items.
Forgot to mention i have the scanguage-2 and am addicted to my temp spread. Had the head gaskets go even with proper maintenence. Actually gasket problem diagnosed on the last day of my extended warrenty and Ford covered the gasket job with me supplying the studs. Dodged a bullet. Thanks for the tips so far. 15W40 using the heater...couldnt resist
All great replies. I have a high flow compressor for a low/flat tire but i will need to add some hose to get back to the camper. Hair spray was definitely not on my radar and i will throw in a set of filters. 69cj i am looking into the Good Sam roadside for anything i cant handle since they have an introductory offer. I know nothing about their service though. I will compare to the AAA Premier. Would love to have a spare Ficm. I will have a trickle charger on the batteries when possible and a spare drive belt. My daughter has a smart phone so i can hopefully reach you guys if it hits the fan. Thanks again
I would just make sure your services are up to date including new oil and filter, fuel filter? When was the last time your coolant was changed? How about brake fluid flush?
I routinely take my SD on long trips so towing a pop up is a non issue. I routinely tow a 24' car trailer or a goose neck trailer, both of which gross between 10-14k#'s. The trips are between 700-1500 miles.
That video must have been made before the Shannon and Val save "All injectors blow out at the same time" thread..... lol... Such a emotional thread.
I would take IPR socket and couple electrical tools (crimper, cutter, stripper, and electrical tape) and I think everyone else pretty much covered what I would also bring.
Sounds like it's going to be a fun trip. Stay safe and good luck!
