Looking at a '95 F250 XLT 4x4 7.3 and I'm hoping to get some thoughts from those of you that know a heck of a lot more than I about such a truck.
First of all I'm looking to buy it to potentially tow for now a '96 Wilderness 5th wheel. Haven't yet bought that either. The truck itself would be used pretty much solely for towing an RV as often as we can get out.
The pics I've seen so far of the truck are only external and it looks really clean. There is some paint peeled on the drivers upper door and some rust just starting on the wheel wells.
Specs are:
- Second owner since 1999
- 3spd auto w/OD
- No engine mods
- Mostly city truck
- Brakes 1-1/2(?) yo
- Had 10.5' camper for unknown duration
- 10 ply tires 18 months old
- New ball joints & tie rods
- Fuel injector harness recently(?) replaced
- Has camper package(air bags, electric brakes, trailer package)
- Transmission replaced 7(?) years ago with strongest duty available at the time
- Hole JUST developed in exhaust a couple days ago
- 1 gas tank replaced recently and both filled regularly
- Interior is supposedly in excellent condition
- Longbox bed just had the liner removed and is supposedly flawless
The only receipts available are for the front end work, tires, and possible injector harness. Nothing on the tranny which surprises me and they don't seem to know what exactly went into it.
Asking price on the truck is $5,400 which I think is a good price in comparison to what I've seen. What I would like to know is what should I be cautious of and what should I be asking?
I am looking at the same kind of truck except the one I am looking at has a bad transmission. It has 249k on it. The trans will be an E4OD and both my current trucks have that transmission. However, I have only owned the F350 for 8 months, and have not put too many miles on it. I have owned the Bronco two and a half years, but have only put 7k miles on it in that time. The F350 has 244k miles on it, and the Bronco 243k. From what I have learned from fellow owners, the biggest problem with these transmissions is excess heat. However, both my vehicles have an aux trans cooler, and I would guess that the one you are looking at would too since it has the tow package. So I would not worry about it. Of course, a test drive would be the best way to tell if it is going out or not.
I've got a 1990 f250 with a 460 e4od combo and it's got 320,000km on it and it's still shifts great. These transmissions are very strong. I believe the c6 is stronger, but the e4ods get better mileage.
Thanks for the feedback. Still haven't had a chance to look at the truck as I was forced to head south and look at the aforementioned trailer. Good thing is I have now put the cart before the horse. Now to find the horse. This truck I am interested in now has the price cut to $4,800 with the addition of "needs paint". Apparently those that may have viewed it weren't too impressed with how it looked. Not sure if the price is so great anymore. I'll look at it when I get up that way if it's still available.
On a positive note, I came across a PAMPERED 1988 F250 Supercab Lariat XLT 4x2 for $2,500. Driven for the last 20 years by a veteran.
460 V8
Automatic transmission
Heavy Duty suspension
Trailer tow package
Canopy, c/w deck liner
Dual gas tanks
214,766 km
Drawback of course is fuel mileage but the truck is immaculate and so tempting.
I love my F350 with the 460. Only thing I don't like is the mpg. The best I have ever recorded so far was13.2 mpg on a long trip (240 miles) towing a unloaded 2,500 lb. car trailer. Worst was 7.6 with mostly city driving. Still for $2,500 the price is definitely right, and pampered does count for something.
