My egr tube is leaking bad in roughly 3 spots I can see in the accordion section, sometimes it leaks into the cab.
I would like to replace it but would be waiting for it to arrive from rock auto, and I feel I'm going to spend a day wrestling with the nut on the exhaust manifold I just don't have time for this right now, I drive it daily and need to make a 170 mile trip this weekend without fumigating myself
I was wondering for the time being I could cut the egr tube near the manifold and near the egr valve and plug both ends and weld shut, I would leave the egr valve connected along with the sensor on top of it and the vacuum line, I figure this way it shouldn't throw a check engine light

Was also thinking about maybe using something like metal hvac tape, not sure if that would melt

yea that muffler repair tape wrapped around it few times would probably last a while, keep it from leaking last that trip and while waiting for replacement part and time to put it on to arrive.

If you leave the EGR connected but not installed then your vehicle may run fine but have a rough idle. I don't think you should unplug the EGR at this time. If you do there's a chance your check engine light will come on.

no everything would be connected just the egr tube cut and capped via welding shut
I might try the tape I'm not sure if it will work the whole accordion piece is destroyed and will probably still leak
whats the best way to get the egr tube off the exhaust manifold fitting? I'm a little worried I will not be able to remove it

When I messed with that years ago, I think I just used a pipe wrench. Try lubing it up with WD-40 or something and let it sit for a while, although if it is seized that may not help. Also try tapping LIGHTLY on the nut to maybe unfreeze it. It might not sound like fun but maybe you'll need to remove the exhaust manifold to get a better grip on the nut. That's not a fun job but can be done in a day.
Start soaking the EGR tube nut with PB blaster or equ over night(after the engine cool'd off) for the next few nights. That helped me getting that rusty EGR tube nut off.
Another trick is try removing it while the engine is HOT, ain't fun but after a month of soaking a EGR tube nut and still didn't loosen up, the heat did help.
IF you have a good torch you could heat up only the nut and try removing it.
After getting it apart. USE NEVER SEIZE on the threads and do not over tighten that nut too.
thanks guys, yeah no way am I pulling the manifold off for a stupid pipe, this truck has been in the salt for 17 years and been a plow rig, I'm not dealing with broken manifold bolts until I pull the engine to install new freeze plugs and do head work
I'm gonna try the metal tape and if that doesnt work I'll be cutting the tube out and capping it
