OK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Could someone please post a complete diagram for the front suspension of a '49 F1. And any blow up pics of the wheel end showing all the joints etc. I've searched till I can't any more and googled and keep coming up with 53-56 stuff. After searching 16 pages of threads on here I can't find where anyone has posted this....but I know it's been posted.
I'm getting a "clanking" sound in the front suspension mostly when I'm easing thru the yard going over some roots or rough ground and mostly when I'm turning while doing that. The steering is great on the truck. It's all stock. Easy to turn. No real slack to me. I jacked up the front and did the ole tire test. Grabbed on each side and tried to wiggle the tire/wheel as if I were turning. Then swapped to hands on the top and bottom and tried wiggling that way. I get no slack either way on that either. I know several of you have completely rebuilt the stock front axle. Any input on what this might be? I know the main answer is "proly could be anything" but lets hope for more than that...lol.
Thanks!
There is not a nickel's worth of difference between the F series and Fxxx series. You see a picture of one, you see the other. Shocks may be mounted differently but axle, king pins, spring mountings, tie rod, steering box, drag link are similar. If all suspension components are tight, check shocks. Check for loose sheet metal such as splash pans, inner fenders, even exhaust and engine mounts.
The shocks were on the truck when I got it so I'm not sure Ilya. I'm going to put it up on the lift at my buddy's shop (wheels hanging of course) and see what's clanking. Something is loose. It just started.
Sorry Im late to the party but Ive been scanning out of the red F-1 Repair man. I don't know if this will help, but it is all I have. Good luck, and please let us know what you find.
Thanks Jim. I appreciate the scans. I just got back inside after putting the front up on jack stands. I think the problem is in fact the shock bushings on the lower right side. The bushing is almost crumbling and I can pull the shock back and forth about half an inch. I took a pic but I'm on my phone so I can't easily post it. Any factory equivalent type shocks you guys would recommend? Keep in mind my money is more scarce than a successful enrollment in the AFFORDABLE care act!
