new member & question
Hi I'm a new member but have been reading for awhile now, I just bought a 50 f5 grain box truck. It is in good shape, My start up question is what colors did these trucks come in? mine has original yellow ( school bus yellow)on the outside and inside, But someone sprayed it over in black years ago, would you think it came in that color or was the truck a state or county truck? also the cab has F5 on the body but the tag on fire wall has the series as F6 It has over load springs and duel rear wheels. any information is greatly appreciated

Welcome to FTE! I am not an expert in 48-52 trucks. I am more knowledgeable with the 53-56 era trucks... But this I know, we have to pictures of this truck, and if you give us the vin number on the tag someone will be able to decipher it. I think the data plate is on the inside of the glove box.

Welcome to FTE! Congrats on the truck buy - always good to have another big'un back on the road. There are a couple of reference sites, but this might get you started: 1950 Color Codes - Ford Paint Cross-Reference
You'll note that there was a chrome yellow color option for '50. I'll let the F4-7 owners chime in regarding the markings and options.
(and of course, we would like to see pics!)

Could we see some pictures? Here is how.
But I got ta say becoming a supporter is the fastest and easiest way to post pics right from
your whatever pad/cell thing or home computer.
Few of us look in the users Gallery or album as you can see by your recent visitors.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

Go to Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket and sign up for a free account. Then create an album for your truck. Upload any pics you want to post on FTE to that album. Have this album open on your computer when you want to post pics on FTE.
While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
The best photos and videos | Photobucket
Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).
When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).
Your pic will be placed in the post.
Hope that helps.
Here's a tutorial Bob put together: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/67...-pictures.html Bob's link is not working. Can someone in the know tell me why?

Thanks for all the welcomes, wow you all respond fast I will set up my profile ASAP, need to snoop around the FTE awhile but in the mean time here's a little background , I live in lower east Michigan and have 10 acres of my grandparents 80 acre farm in the lower east part of the state it was sold when they passed years ago, we have owned it for 31 years now, I was a auto body repairman for almost 32 years I started back in 75, I have my late fathers side of the family that still live in the area. I try to get to the farm as often as I can, I bought this ole 50 in Late February of this year and had it delivered to the farm, It was from North Dakota, It has some small rust spots on the fenders, dents, the engine turns over but it needs a tune up to get it running, I'll be going up to work on it in a few weeks , hope to get some spark out of it, I'm also redoing a 35 chevy 1 and a half ton flat bed . It's been 4 years on this one, and I also redid a 1952 international super A tractor , I don't discriminate on what people like, to me their all good but better if there old and kept alive, Well I think I'll stop and let others ask some good questions on the site, Thanks for the time to say Hi, Glen M

Welcome to FTE, you have really landed on the best site for help with an old Ford. It sounds like you may have a truck with some mixed information. To start with, your serial number is from a 1949 F-5, breaking as thus:
9= 1949/50 171xxx would be a low range number meaning it's a 1949
7H= 226 flathead 6 95 hp
T= F5
171493= production number
Now the color will be in a code stamped into the upper firewall area in the center or toward the drivers side near the seam. The glove box tag should also show the 'model' in the lower right corner.
The only TRUE serial number (the one that counts legally) is the one stamped in the right frame rail, passenger side between the radiator and the front axle. (on a V8 it's next to the radiator, but on a 6 cylinder the radiator is a little more forward)

Welcome Glen. I have attached a scan of an original color chart.
Since you live close by I would like to invite you to join our local Ford Truck Club, Klassic Haulers (Welcome to Klassic Haulers of Michigan). Just by chance we are having a dinner at my house near Northville tomorrow night. PM me if you can come. We would like to meet you. The members are an extremely experienced bunch. Lots of help finding parts and learning about your truck.

I got a set of those back in 1971 when I bought a new Dodge van, they were called Junior West Coast Mirrors.
