I'd appreciate it. This thing is killing me. I hope to have the replacement part this Friday. That's going to be its own adventure. Thanks!

Thanks, I'll give it a shot. I didn't see anything in the procedure that stood out so maybe I just need to apply a little more force. Thanks for posting!

Glad it worked. And the next page gives instructions on how to put it all back together IIRC.

So the part was delivered yesterday. Everything looked good. I made the cuts do it would fit and had no problems there. Over the course of about 3 hours (2 hours spent just trying to get a couple bolts where they belong) I got everything reassembled. Reattached the battery and started her up! Shift into reverse and I go forward. Shift into first I sputter a bit and go forward. Wait a minute, that was second and third. I can't get the shifter to move over into the reverse and first positions! What did I do wrong? Is sething just not quite aligned? I think the shift collar is maybe a quarter inch further out than originally. Would that do it? It looks like I'll be dis/re assembling later today to get that quarter inch back. Any other thought? Thanks.

Yes, something isn't aligned. You MIGHT get lucky and be able to adjust it from under the truck where the shift lever linkage connects to the piece going to the tranny. But that will probably throw everything out of whack, so you really ought to figure out what you did wrong and fix it.

Sounds like you didn't have the shift lever in the proper position whenever you reassembled it. That stuff is tricky to put back where it came from. The sad part about is that the column will let you put it back together wrong and then you have to backtrack to that point in order to fix it.

That was it! I took it back apart this evening and repositioned the shift lever. Things fit slightly better than last night and after reassembling I think it works! I at least have reverse and first. It felt like I could shift into 2nd and 3rd too, but I'll takes test drive in the morning. Thanks everyone for the help. Drew

I was just heavily involved in a tilt column yesterday. That's how I knew.

I took a quick spin around the neighborhood and I'm happy to report everything seems to be working. Shifting is SO much easier than before. I suspect the collar was broken when I bought the vehicle a few ago. Thanks again for the assistance. I will be asking more questions shortly.

I should have added that I cleaned everything on the inside while I was in there and put fresh grease on all the mechanisms and moving parts. The column operates better than new.

Be sure that you don't do what the person that was inside my column did. They didn't get the wires packed back in very well and the steering wheel rubbed the insulation off of 3 wires in spots about 2" long. Also those bare spots had long frays of wire going every which way. I cant believe that fuses didn't get popped or worse.

Where were they rubbing? Are you talking about the harness that has probably 10 or so wires running the length of the column?
