2004 Expedition tranny issue

Guys I just bought a used 2004 Expedition XLT. The tranny was supposedly rebuilt. When I drove it home I heard a humming coming from the right side of the truck and it didn't seem to want to change gears. I have had the truck a while now in the driveway haven't driven it cause of an insurance lapse suspension. I decided to check the fluid but can't get a good read on it? I've tried it cold and tried it hot. When it's cold I have fluid on the indicator ( it's new and red ) but can't really tell it's level? When the transmission is warm and I go through the gears then check it and there is nothing on the dipstick? Also when I go through the gears you can feel reverse engage but when I put it in drive you feel it engage but a few seconds later you feel it disengage? 2nd and 1st engage fine but only drive catches you feel the back "squat" but then a few seconds later it "stands"? Is it low fluid, too much fluid? I have no idea! Help me someone please.
