I have an 03 Expedition 4x4 with the 5.4l engine. Tonight while filling up the tank, I decided to check the rest of the fluids, including the tranny since it was nice and warm. I was shocked to see that the fluid level was below the cold levels. I have had no signs of leakage what so ever from the tranny, have not pulled a trailer in the last 15k and most of the miles (70%) have been highway miles. The truck just turned 20k tonight.
I don't believe the truck has any leaks. I couldn't see any plus I park it in the same spot in the driveway every night and just powerwashed the driveway 30 days ago, so tranny fluid would stand out.
Any thoughts on this? Prior to tonight, the levels have been where they should be.
If fluid is leaking, you should see it on the tranny and crossmember. It should be covered in fluid. Crawl under it and take a look.
Also, there's an outside chance that it was this low all the time. You didn't say whether you'd ever checked it or not. Fill it up, mark where the level is, then check it in a week and see if it's any lower.
I can't see any fluid, and I usually check the fluids on a pretty regular basis, A minimum of every oil change, which is about 3 weeks with my driving patterns.
