Aggravating afternoon. Tried to get my F100 inspected.
Started with my dealership as I have used them for years.
They lifted it up on the lift, inspected ball joints, etc. He came back with one issue, a heat riser from near the manifold to the breather (even though it had one of those air breathers that just covered the carb). He said nothing about the air breather, said it was fine, just needed that riser.
Second try, tiny exhaust leak near the muffler and would not inspect it without the big air breather.
Scratching my head now. Left it at a local muffler shop. They said they would fix the exhaust leak and said they would tack on a riser to the manifold.
Argggggg.
On the good side, the salvage yard about 30 miles away said they have 5 factory-style wheels they can sell me reasonably ($30 each). Might see if they have the breather.

Have you got headers on that 71..?
If all stock you'll need the manifold stove heat pipe that attaches to the snorkel in the big air filter also to pass. And the exh manifold sheet metal adapter for the stove heat pipe to attach too.
If you had headers you can make cheap adapter that clamps onto the exh header tube from a v8 juice can you know. Lots of little cheap tricks to get it to pass. And don't forget the gas cap some test too.
Calif. is known for being Chicken S for many things a long with the EPA.
But we don't have any more smog testing for vehicles under 1976.
Other then the high cost of gas, housing taxes and a few other things.
Oh and lots of nice weather around most of the state it's was a nice place to live. Until the invasion of,~~well, I won't go their on here.

There is a link to a zoomed photo of the right side of the engine.
Don't have the big air filter. Came with the little "performance filter."
checking at a couple of places today for the big air breather.
And will check at the salvage yard where I am picking up 5 steel wheels for the truck.
Our security guard told me of a similar way to get it to work using a coffee can.
I have heard of the challenges of owning old stuff in California. As a gun nut, I think I would have issues there as well.
The guard at my employer is into old vehicles. Called one of his friends, who is a Ford guy. Ends up the friend has a 1983 Ford 300 six with complete air breather assembly. Should be able to make that work for inspection.
Picked up this air breather this evening.
It came off of an 83 straight six with a single barrel carb, but the part number on it indicates it was for an earlier year (forget now, think 66).
Hoping it will work.
Looks about right like the right one. I see that the other rear valve cover hose is missing can suck dust in it. It should connect to the underside of the aftermarket air filter when hooked up right. It's suppose pull the oil extra vapor out and burn it by feeding it back into the carb base. Not just be open like that. Unless you've plled it off.
Oh well maybe some day you'll fix it right and use it after testing & pass EPA PVC shxt

1970/72: Dry type (paper filter) air cleaner standard equipment, oil bath air cleaner optional.

I see you are from Texas; WHY are you going through this???? This truck should be registered as a classic truck and ONLY requires a safety inspection. They only need to make sure the turn signals, lights, brake lights, horn , wipers and brakes work. They should check and see if the wheels have all the lug nuts as well. They will drive it for a short distance and do the brake check, verify insurance, and send you on your way after you pay $14. There is NO EMISSIONS TEST and depending on the year may not even require seat belts. I have done three trucks recently and they all have been that way; took about 10 min each time. Go to a stupid jiffy lube and get it done.
classic has some driving restrictions and in my area, some I have spoken with have indicated the police are watching more closely. The antique plates are restricted to parades, two and from events and driving it to be worked on.
I have friends with antique motorcycles and they say they don't catch any flack. But others with cars of about my era, say they have been told to park it or get the regular plates.
Mine passed inspection yesterday.
Numberdummy, that is definitely not the $15 air breather I bought and was able to "use" to get the truck through inspection. Will begin the quest for that one.

Sorry, but the rules apply to your the state; not "your area". And if a truck is registered as a Classic Truck then there are NO restrictions and it requires a safety inspection ONCE a year. Not every 5 years like a vehicle registered as a antique. You went through a lot of BS IMO.
I was referring to Antique license plates. I did not even know about Classic plates.
I have yet to find much documentation on their use. And I guess if I could find a set of good condition 1971 plates, I could use them instead.
