Ok i have an 85 f-150 with the 4.9L straight 6 in it. it is carburated so i have a pre heater hose running from the air filter to a flange/heat shield/metal thingy above the exhaust manifold. I need to know what that thing is since mine is rusted and needs to be replaced to stop this annoying rattling. please help!!!!
I should have kept mine around when I switched to headers on the gas truck. It was in great shape. Now I usually keep most parts I take off the truck. For those just in case moments.
I always called that thing the "Heat Riser". Important for cold weather running of a gasoline engine. Always had them on my carburated cars. In cold weather the air is more dense than in warm weather... Harder for the gasoline to pass the phase barrier from liquid to gas with cold air.... Requires energy to pass the phase barrier... (Kind of what happens in an air conditioner when you evaporate freon?) You get a bog or flat spot without the heat riser. Also carb icing could happen.

You don't necessarily NEED one for winter. I'm sure it helps, but I never needed it in MI winters when I was at school. I switched to a manual choke and it started up every morning just fine. Although sometimes if it got cold enough, I'd have to take the battery inside with me overnight otherwise it would crank too slowly.
funny story...i took that part off today to be sure that was the rattle....it wasn't...it wound up being my heat shield on my cat.....bolted that closed and sounds great....oh well just gives me more of a reason to play with the truck
