So my factory back-up sensors are not working and I was looking for some troubleshooting tips. I had a scanner hooked up not too long ago and did not receive any codes relating to it. The dash light to turn the sensor on and off lights up and turns off fine. Does anyone have/ know of the test procedure to check these?
Key on, engine off, place truck in reverse with the e brake set. Go back to the sensors and listen at each one. You should hear a faint clicking. The one not clicking is failed.

So basically 1/4 failed sensors will cause the whole system to shut off? Just clarifying. I'll give it a shot when I leave work (along with the other issues i'm testing on here ) and report back ....
Got to sneak out real quick to check this out. Didn't hear any clicking but led me to another question, the back up sensor button next to the 4x4 selector stayed lit ("OFF"). I tried to turn the light off which should turn the sensors on but it would not let me. Should the light stay on or should I be able to turn it on and off in that situation?
You can only turn the light off if your not in reverse. I have one bad sensor and my off light comes on as soon as I put in reverse and will not go off until I push the button to turn it off. I'd try and find a quite place and listen to your sensors again, I'm sure you'll hear it with your ear on the sensor.
I went through this with my Excursion a few years ago. Like th67ss said - you can only turn the light off when you are not in reverse. When you put it in reverse the system does a quick systems check, if it doesn't receive the signal from the sensor it trips the code, disables the system and turns the light in the button on. Now, when I had 2 bad sensors Auto Enginuity did pick up the codes....what scanner are you using?
Just noticed this, I tried to do the test to listen to the sensors. I key on the truck, and turned the back up sensors on (light off on button), and as soon as I put it in reverse the light comes back on (back-up sensors off). Does this help point me in any direction. I just had a basic universal scanner when the right side glow plug module went out. So that one didn't pick up any other codes ....
I maybe wrong but I don't think you'll hear any noise out of them if the button shows off. I wonder if you can pull one at a time and find your bad one that way?
