Reading my 64 Ford shop manual, part 3-4 , for wheel installation it sez:
"For proper balance, line up the notch on the drum with the valve stem on the wheel."
Gotta admit, didn't know this. Getting ready to put wheels on - and didn't notice any notch on drum. There are two machined holes on either side of one of the wheel studs, maybe the stem/wheel is indexed to this?
I found the valve stem on the tire, so we're good there. Anybody know?
Yes, tires are balanced a lot better on wheels, but apparently there was some thought given to a rough balance of the wheel/tire and the drum, as an assembly.. Jus' Sayin'.
It won't hurt anything to follow the manual here, anyone know where the notch is on the drum?
Well, after 50 years of wear, tear & parts swapping, it's not going to make 2 cents worth of difference in my opinion. If you're that concerned about it, have the tires spun balanced on the truck. Otherwise, just bolt them on and drive it! It's not a Lamborgini......
I have seen rear drums with a notch before on 70's F series 3/4 and 1 ton trucks we had where I worked , it allowed clearance for dual rear tire setups on the inner wheel for the angled brass valve stem to turn and point outward being they had so much backspacing . If you didn't line them up you would break off the brass valve stems .
