I have a 1999 Mazda B2500 pickup, last night I heard a pop and lost brake pressure. I remover rear passenger wheel and drum today to find brake fluid everywhere. I noticed I had a broken spring on bottom and the adjuster broken on bottom of brake pads. I bought a new brake drum kit and self adjusting kit and replaced them all. Put everything back together and bleed the brake. ( forgot to bleed other rear brake) Took for ride to test brakes and they worked fine but noticed the ABS light and Brake light was on. When returned home, noticed that wheel drum was hot. Also need add more brake fluid half empty. What could be cause of hot drum and light? Low brake fluid?
The hot brakes suggest a dragging brake shoe, so adjust the rear brake shoe free play.
The lit ABS light may be caused by air in the system because you didn't properly bleed the brake system. If the system lost all of its fluid & the rear ABS valving also lost fluid & air got into its valving, you'll need to pull a vacuum on the system at the rear brake wheel cyl with your mighty vac or the like, while cycling the ABS motor with a high end scantool, to bleed the air out of the ABS valving & brake lines & this can be trickey. If you don't have the equipt or expierence to do this, a trusted brake shop could do it. After the repair you did remember to use your scantool to clear the brake codes, or disconnect the battery to do so.....right????
On the brake warning lamp being on, the low brake fluid sensor in the under hood brake master cyl reservoir isn't happy for some reason, so check the master cyl fluid level & top it up if low & make sure there isn't an air bubble, or some other problem with the float or sensor being stuck. After making sure the master cyl fluid level is right, maybe give the float a thump with your finger & see if it'll wake up.
Some thoughts for consideration, let us know how it goes.
Thank you I repaired problem. My self adjuster was too wide so brake pads rubbed drum. I repaired that and filled brake fluid and bleed brakes. Lights went off and after same trip drum is still cool to touch.
Lost brakes on way home today and pulled over and saw brake fluid over passenger rear tire again. Had truck towed home. Will check it out this weekend, hope I just had self adjuster to loose and it slipped off. Was not any pop this time like before. Gets frustrating
I just remembered to add I didn't spray the inside of the wheel drum with something to clean all the old brake fluid out. Would this cause it to slip off or play a hand in the mishap?
If you've gotten brake fluid on the linings, you'll likely need to replaced them, or they'll grab on brake application.
Don't bother reworking a wheel cylinder, its less costly to just unbolt & replace it while you have things apart. NAPA has a good deal on brake cleaner spray.
If you don't have a service manual to check how they go back together, pull the brake drum on the other side & use it an an example of how its put together to check, or reassemble the problem side.
What do you mean replace the linings? I thought is self adjuster came off can put it back on after I spray all parts real good to remove and excess brake fluid. But when I was putting it together first time the part I bought ( forgot name but brake line runs into it) the rubber end popped off it and piece inside came out. I just put it back together.
You said in your first post that you found brake fluid every where.
Re-read the first sentence in my above post, for the reason to replace brake linings that have had brake fluid on them.
Re using linings that have been wet with brake fluid & cleaned off with brake cleaner spray isn't good practice for the reason I posted.
