Filter Thoughts

I replaced my fuel filter for the first time today. The secondary fuel filter that i took off the truck did not have the third nipple (not sure exactly what its called) but I think its what they use at the factory to bleed or purge the air from the system. I purchased the truck new. Anyone else see this, where the secondary filter did NOT come with that third valve/inlet/outlet tube? Just seems strange, anyone else think so? Truck has about 13000 miles.

Are you using OEM filters?

Yep, OEM (FD-4615). The part I found odd was the one I took out, it didnt have the third piece that everyone says it comes with from the factory. I received the truck with 26 miles on it (the dealer got it from another). Its a 2011.

I had the Ford dealer do my first oil and fuel filter change. I actually haven't seen an OEM fuel filter. I bought the truck in TX and had it serviced at a dealer in Beaumont. I saw a "how to" youtube video on changing the fuel filters after returning home. While I will be using Motorcraft parts, the dealer won't be doing my next service. I would imagine it is used to evacuate the air for initial startup like you say.

The replacement filters do not include the third nipple as it was included in the factory one for factory use. My guess is the same as yours on the function of the third nipple being used to purge the system. I wouldn't imaging the factory wanting to do 6-8 key cycles for 30 sec each for every Diesel coming down the line.

Hey Blue Oval, After reading this thread, I checked under the hood when I got home from work and there's no third nipple on mine either. When I bought the truck, it hadn't even been through dealer prep yet, so I bet my filter is still the factory one. I guess they figured out a way to manage without it.

Wow! You have a 2011 with 13,000 miles? I wish I could turn back the clock on mine a bit, you ran out of time on your warranty way before miles. Mine was the other way around.

Thanks guys, makes me feel better knowing mine wasn't alone here. I didn't know what was going on when I saw that.

I usually only drive the truck on the weekends and to haul my toy hauler on trips, so I dont rack up the miles. I do one oil change per year and drain the dcfm regularly. Love this truck.

I was thinking that the "3rd nipple" filters went away in 2012, but maybe it was the Job 2 2011 trucks.

My Job 1 2012 (Built Dec 2011) had the third nipple on the OEM filter; it also had the new design w/o the screw clamp to hold the filter.

Twist/turn CCW; and pull up; unfortunately it is extremely tight fit.
