I've seen a lot as far as 5star is concerned but i was wondering about other brands ect and their performance. I talked with 5 star and they said around 30hp 60tq and maybe 1 mpg. Thanks. This site has been awesome so far guys.
there is also bully dog, hyperchip, banks makes one. Your best bet would be to google it and see what the results are. I have no experience with any except SCT (5star) and they seem to get high marks for the 3v motors like the one you have.
One thing to consider, the HP/TQ figures you're getting are on 93 octane performance tunes. So just because that's what you "can" get doesn't mean that's what will make sense for you to run.
Yes, canned tunes are OK but 5 star tunes are custom, well worth the money. I will tell you flat out except for maybe at cruise on the HWY you will not get better mileage, you will get much worse because after installing the tune even the 87 perf/tow the pedal is so responsive and the truck is so much faster and sooooooooo much more fun to drive you will always be putting your foot into it.
I think Ford tunes them like they do to make you think "its a dog" might as well drive it like a grandma.
I was really missing my tuned duramax diesel when I first got my 09 v-10 since I got the 5 star tunes the only thing I miss is the fuel economy, the v10 is quicker up to 50 than my old diesel with turbo lag and drive by wire and the v10 is so much smoother and quieter.
I had a superchips tuner laying around so I plugged it into my 06 V10. I plugged in the 87 tune while I was on a 3 tank of gas highway trip. I got .5mpg more. I got a very slight power increase. Most notably, it raised the redline from 42 to 4400rpm. This is where my motor sounds best and makes the most power so this increase was nice. Firm crisp shifts are another nice thing you get. If I were to buy a new tuner I would go 5 star but this superchip that I had in 2 previous fords offered decent performance. I have it in a 6.2 superduty now and it gave that truck a VERY noticeable performance increase.
I don't drive my truck too much I got a company truck so running 93 isn't that big a deal to me. I am leaning towards 5star but other things come first on the truck. But I do want bigger tires so the tires and tuner kinda go together for me. I like the factory wheels so they will stay. Window tint and seat covers need to come soon. A 8 year old is rough on some seats.
