Hey im thinking about puting a tuner or chipping my V10 whats the best brand and give me some pros and cons. And does it really help with the gas milage or is that a bunch of bull
thanks matt
ok i am probibly the best one to help you for your 06 v10 3v as i'm the one who has played with a tuner plus in and on a 3 valve 05 v10.
the only good tuner is from some one who dose a custom tune with a sct excalibator 2 from www.sctflash.com. our web site owner and web master ken is one and sct web site can turn you on to some one nearby your mail zip code. the later is what i would use . maybe you will find one near by that also has a dyno to help set that tune
sct makes a universal excal2 tuner for the v10. but don't use it. to generac .you want some one to custom tune as most likely the first set will need some touching up to your driveing. and area you live in which i see is texas . also withthe custom tune you can down load free software from sct and touch up and reset some areas on your own by the use of you home pc and a printer .usb cable. you can also go into and log the many areas of operation with one of their free programs and a lap top while driveing under real world conditions.
as to getting better mpg's out of the 3 v 10 v.no you will not. adding a cold air kit, no you will not. cat back .louder only. no real help. maybe .2 or.3 at most. so yes imm it's bull. i have tryed .
i have also installed headers lost down stairs and got back what i lost more up stairs.
theres realy not many parts out for the new 3v 10v motor and dosenot seem we will see much ever with the new emmission laws coming out soon.
as to the overall running i imm say as others will ford already has done about every thing possible right out of the box with this motor and it runs pretty much the best stock,
you can email if would like and i wouls be more then happy to tryand help with what i have learned the hard way by wasting money.
best wishes with the ride and your bseg .from driving it.
of course Charlie is our resident hot rod guru on the 2005/06 3v V10 and his experience has probably save a few owners a lot of grief.
We don't really know what v10 truck you have so his experience on the 3v V10 may not apply completely to your motor if it is a 99-2004 2v V10 version. And it matters if you have a manual trany, low or high gears and other things like use, and configuration
i have a sct sf tuner for my 05 v10. it does make more more horsepower but definitely does not help on fuel mileage.on the 93 octane program this v10 scoots alonfg good, wont blow u away tho but dont buy one for gas mileage. my biggest problem is it wont correct for larger tires and part throttle shifts it bangs the gearswhen cruising around, i say if u want fuel mileage get a different vehicle, normal is 9 to 11 mpg peroid.
fred he has a 06 by his profile.
again i have tryed most of whats out there. best to drive them as is from the factory.
yes you can get some more out of them power wise . but you will get is not worth the cost put out. and you will not see any mpg increase at all only worse .
with the tuner you can change around a few items . change shift feel. sct's excal2 with the down loadable soft ware from their web site will let you change tire size on your own.,make the shift firmness firmer, add 2 degs gobal timeing. more fuel .
best if you thinking tuner to check out their web site and read for your self.
one big thing i will say is don't even think about a big deep oil pan for the trans. the left exhaust pipe cat. convertor combo is in the way as it winds it way to the right side . you DON'T want to cut that pipe . the convertor set just set me back almost 2 k today with shipping and sales tax. as i did cut mine and reroute it for a deep pan.
do and don'ts ask first most of us can help you a lot . esp. when it comes to hard earned cash
I saw some comments on not using the usual chip units and to do something else. I did not see the posts while at home so my question would be why not use a Bully Dog or similar system on my '03? I have a K&N intake with a Helix Tower Power up front and the usual Flowmaster exhaust upgrade out the back. I did notice a perceived increase in torque, especially when pulling our travel trailer. I also noticed a bit of a change in the mileage. I would like to be able to get the maximum out of my truck in all respects, power, mileage, etc. So far the only variable that ruins my gas mileage more than pulling the trailer is the lousy excuse for fuel that contains ethanol. Fortunately I can use non-ethanol in my home territory and maintain my mileage. So what do the guys who work on these all the time have to say. I'm looking forward to what this page might bring.

@adwjoe Starting a new thread wild be better. This is 12 years old already.
I had an 06 F250 and put a superchips cortex tuner in it. Didn't notice much except better shifting. I test drove a 2010 truck that had a bullydog tuner, airaid intake and banks cat back exhaust. That truck was a rocket!! The giggle meter was huge and I was impressed. I wasn't able to make a deal on that unit and eventually found a 2009 that I still own. This truck, gave me a V10 first getting 16mpg in stock form [Canadian gallons]. I tried to mimic the power of the rig I test drove by adding the same intake, exhaust and custom 5 star tunes. This package made the big V10 a hole new beast but it never had the same "snap as the unit I test drove. The truck is now modded with lift, bumper, big tires and such. It rolls along at 14mpg now. Don't expect and mpg gains from a tuner as you will only net about .5mpg at most. You will get a more drivable unit though!
