Bearing installation tips

These bearings have about an hour of run time according to the previous owner:

Problem is the shells were overlapped slightly. Clue number one should have been the fact that it was hard to turn over, but I'm not the guy who put it together so I can't comment on that. Clue number two would have been the noise, but Yanmar diesels in proper order sound like they are about to fly apart anyways. Luckily the crank isn't too bad, I think I can save it but this was nearly really bad.

You should have seen the blue goo used in place of gaskets. Ever seen what diesel fuel does to that stuff?

yup. it turns it into purple slop that plugs up every hole it comes in contact with.
