If I don't have one will a regular off the shelf scan tool look at my IPR? I have one of those and if it won't work is there another way to be sure it will start right up after I replace the injectors?

I don't think an off the shelf will look at. Scanners just read codes. As for it starting right up. It will take some cranking to get it fired up. After it does just let it idle for awhile then take it out for a long drive to clear it out. Normally a good hundred miles will due. But you don't need to do it one drive.

Ok just curious. And as for the first running start up do I put it all back together or do I leave the valve covers off until it idles? I might of answered my own question here seeing as some guys retorque the bolts but I'm curious

You can leave the valve covers off without any problem. The one caveat I've found is if the oil is cold and thick, you might want to keep an eye on it so it doesn't overflow the head and run all over everything. I had some spill out on the ground at about 20F ambient with a cold engine.

Let it run for a while with the valve covers off. Let it get warm, then turn it off and re-torque the bolts. As for getting the oil out of the cylinders prior to starting - take the glow plugs out, as was suggested but, PUT THE VALVE COVERS BACK ON, use a couple of bolts, you don't have to put them all back, just two or three, then with the 42 pin connector safely secured out of the way and unhooked, bump the starter a couple of times. It will remove the oil in the cylinders then you can remove the valve covers, and install the glow plugs.

Trust me on this, there is enough oil in just one cylinder, to make a hell of a mess. With rags draped over the cylinders, you will blow them out of the way and have oil everywhere. With just one cylinder on the passenger side, I managed to shoot oil 10-12 feet up the side of the wall in the shop, and about 2 million droplets of oil all under the hood, on the engine, and on the floor about 6-8 feet around the front of the truck.

Using a rag to hold the oil back is like loading a projectile into a water cannon.

Hey all figured I would give you an update on the replacement. Everything went well all torqued got almost my 100 miles on it already and oil level is staying the same so far. The only thing I want to ask is going from AB to AD idk if this is the issue but the past couple of start ups I had a couple romps that went away after I tapped the throttle. Anyone have in site on this? Also thought I would add it's about 33 degrees idk if that makes a difference

Rich's struggles are almost worst case scenario, but my torn o-rings on 5 of 8 injectors comes close. I would have had a very hard time figuring that all out if it wasn't for Rich's experiences and input.

Hey guys,
Reading through the post here about running truck with-out valve covers on. When I attempted that, oil was spurting out in small squirts over top of motor making a mess of things. I viewed a utube video of someone checking there sticks one at a time, never saw any oil squirting out of those heads. Question is, is mine an apparent failure somewhere?

It sounds like when the injectors were installed, someone forgot to put the oil deflector spouts back on the hold downs. They bolt to the hold down at the top left corner (when facing the cylinder bank from the fender), and direct the oil from the spill port on the injector down to the head's surface.

No. I did not forget the deflectors. What else can make the oil squirt out?

I can't think of any other reason, really. Maybe one or more aren't aligned quite right?

I forgot to take some during replacement because I just wanted to get done but I will however take pics of the old injectors I took out and I will get a video of how she is running now which is good but the romp at start up is the only thing bothering me
