So I had water in the fuel and drained about 16oz of deisel and no.more message. Well it can on again today. I will ne changing filters this weekend but was wondering how much should be drained when this comes up. Thanks in advance
Also sometimes algae will build up in the housing and trigger the sensor
if it has not corroded it. Then you can spray some carb cleaner in with
the plastic straw that comes on the can. The other option is remove the
cover and clean the gunk out. You want a replacement gasket and if you
find a bad sensor you need a cover. You can get it with or without the
new style drain plug. If you don't have the new plug I would get it.
So much less of a pain to drain with the new brass plug.

Why did Ford not use a filter that does not allow water to pass. My bobcat and my 55 gallon fuel tank with electric pump have such filters.
Motorcraft and Racor filters do block the water with a filter media called "Aqua-bloc"....and the water stays right there, hence the reason to drain it.

i'll vouch for the gasket. i tried reusing mine when i removed the cover a few weeks back and spent two days trying to diagnose a no-start condition after putting everything back together.. was that gasket.
be prepared and buy it online; i had mine apart and taking up space in my buddy's shop, so i had to get the gasket at my local stealership in a pinch... to the tune of $55.

Ok, did a little research and I see how the system works now.
I am not very impressed with the engineer who designed this fuel/water separator system. Problems include (1) water storage limited, (2) drain system design is as ignorant a design as anyone could have envisioned particularly considering where the drain is located.
Oh well, in any event, is there an aftermarket separator drain system out there for the 6.0?
