It ain't the pulling that is in question, its the stopping.

A heavy loaded bumper pull trailer and a sudden stop without trailer brakes can transfer all the weight and lift up on the rear bumper, taking off or decreasing the downward hitch pressure, so now you have to steer and stop all that mess primarily with the front end.

Sound like a jack knife wreck in the making to me. Also know that some u haul places might not let you take the trailer if they do not agree with your tow vehicle.

And normally it must be wired for lights before it leaves the premises.

That's correct in all aspects. I plan to wire up the lights prior to picking up the trailer. I do not think the trailer has brakes on it. I will have to look into that. The entire braking system on my truck is new as of ~3 months ago. If I use the Ford, I plan to go over it with a fine tooth comb to weed out any potential (and dangerous) issues. I will check into if the trailer has brakes or not this afternoon/evening.

Sounds like a good plan and if no electric brakes maybe some hydraulic surge brakes. better than nothing....

No elec brakes should be a 4 pin plug. If it has electric they might require you to have a controller, I'd call ahead and plan accordingly.

Why is the 351M getting 6mpg empty? That sounds a little low for even the thirsty 460!

I bet its low geared like my silver truck and screams around sucking down gas, the 33's helped mine a bit, 35's would help even more.

It does not like to do 60+.

i'd go rent a u-haul pickup and worry about fixing all of my stuff when i had more time.

U-Haul: Pickup Truck Rental

what you spend in rental you will likely save in gas.

I suggested that he rent a truck as well. He replied that that is not an option since he is only 18. Now he could maybe get an older relative to rent a truck and tow the trailer for him. But it sounds like he wants to do this himself. Not sure though just a guess.

My trucks got 4:10 rear gears in it. That little 351 screams getting my truck up to speed. The other issue on why I can't rent a truck is because the place I'm renting from doesn't offer them. Its a small town rental place that really has a lack of stock. I know that when I tried to rent a car trailer that it didn't have trailer brakes on it...just the 4 pin connector. I will check with the place tonight to see if the trailer will work with my truck (assuming that I install my trailer light plug.)

i wouldn't worry one bit about having 4.10's.

my camper special has the same gearing. i just keep my speed to 65.

no biggie.

the car trailer you tried to rent may have had surge brakes. every uhaul car trailer i have seen has them, and every 2 axle cargo trailer from uhaul has them as well.

Ok guys I apparently can't read. The trailer is WAY lower in weight than I thought for some dumb reason. It weighs 900 lbs EMPTY. I figure once I load it down with ~300 lbs worth of stuff that it should weigh around 1500 lbs. It DOES NOT have brakes. Just the 4 way connector for lights.

You should have no problem using the Ford then. The other truck would *probably* be *okay* to use too in this case, but it seems like the Ford is better suited for it as is.

Man, I can't believe how stuck in there that hitch is though. I guess I was nowhere close to getting it loose by whacking it with a ball peen hammer then
P.S. Even though the trailer is lighter, we still need pics!

Don't worry you'll get pics! That is, when I actually get the trailer...which isn't until the 21st. And yeah that hitch supported the weight if the truck as it was being towed up a flatbed. We tried to rip it out and it still didn't budge.

Hmm...makes me wanna have a truck pull and put the chain on that hitch now...

Alright good lol yeah I read that part about the flatbed, that's crazy. If the back of the hitch receiver is open, I wonder if a PO welded it in there or something

If you do, count me in! The ol 6.9 is ready to go, I think I actually might put her in the walworth county fair truck pull this year. My goal is to move the sled lol

You go to the Walworth county fair?!?!? I go there every year! Haha I may have either the ford or my dodge there this year...I'd love to enter my truck in a pull like that, but I doubt it could pull much in stock form lol.

Gimme all summer, about a thousand dollars, and a well tuned radio though, and I got some nice ideas for what I'm gonna do to its original engine that's in the garage...

Yeah man! I've gone a lot, it's my favorite fair. The Lake county fair SUCKS now since they moved it, I would describe it as a yuppie fair. Anyway, at Walworth I go in and almost immediately go straight for the tractors lol I spend so much time walking through there. That will be cool though, you mean just driving it there? It would be cool to see what yours could do though. I'm sure I could do a decent pull, but the problem is that the classes are usually too broad... I'd be pulling against "built" (usually just a chip lol) cummins and powerstrokes, with my N/A idi. If they had a stock gas class that I could pull in though, I bet I'd do good lol

Build that thing this summer and drop er in and be ready for next year
