Idle speed

Hi Guys,Do you know about what my 94 f 350 460 cid engine is suppose to idle at,its about 900 right now give or take a few.If thats too high or low what do you think is wrong,the truck idles smooth with no problems.

Idle speed should be about 650-700rpm so it appears you are a little high but your tach could also be off, maybe verify idles speed with a hand held multimeter or scope. Idle speed is computer controlled so if it's not right it's usually because of a sensor problem, pull codes to see if anything is flagged and if that's all clear(code 111) back probe the TPS sensor so see if it's within spec.

throttle position sensor, it will be on the driver side of the cobra head with a 3 wire pigtail, back probe it to see what voltage is at idle and wide open throttle, sweep the throttle slow and make sure the voltage change is consistant and there are no dead spots, you can back probe another one of the wires to make sure it is getting 5v

should be between .6-1v at idle

How does one use a multimeter to check rpm?
