What is normal idle speed.

Without pushing on the gas pedal, my idle speed will get me up to 25 mph on a level run. I was just wondering if this is normal, or is my idle to high.

Thanks
Justin

my truck idles at around 1000+ rpm when first started, and around 600-700 or so once its warmed up. my truck will barely move anywhere when i first put it into gear. My experience with ford automatics is that they wont go too fast from a stop untill you push on the gas. hope the idle speeds help you to diagnose this situation.

I have a problem then, in gear and warm it idles at 1000, what is the most common problem in this case, because I know that on fuel injected models you cant adjust the idle speed. I have seen allot of mention about the TPS in some of these high idle speed posts. Thanks for any help.

well, the idle speeds i gave were actually in neutral, so your idel is a bit high. It may be as a result of the idle air control (IAC)motor, or the throttle position sensor (tps). there is an adjustement for the idle speed, but its best to not touch it. does this idling speed make for difficult braking or any other problems? i wouldnt really worry about it all that much if it doesnt cause any problems. You also might want to look into pulling the codes from the computer, which is easily described in the haynes repair manual. or, as a most simple check, take the intake off and move the butterflies by hand, and see how dirty it is in there. its possibly you have a bit of dirt proping the throttle just slightly open. A bit of throttle body cleaner never hurt anyone.

There is no adjustment for the idle by the conventional method. The computer handles all of the idle functions. The throttle plate stop screw should never be adjusted. I would check for vaccuum leaks first. Any place that additional air can get into the intake will serve to up the idle RPM's.

Yeah, it does make it difficult to brake. This is the reason I posted. The highspeed idle just did not seem right. I recently resurrected this beast after it sat for about 4 years. Its a 87 full size 5.0. It took about 500.00 to get it running properly, but this high idle worries me because of the winter coming on and I realy have to crank on the brake to stop sharply. Thanks for the advice, looks like I will be busy this weekend

I had almost the same problem. sometimes, mostly when it was cold it would idle okay, then start idleing around 1000-1200 RPM as it warmed up. Replacing the TPS fixed my problem. Pretty easy fix and cheap if that turns out to be the problem.

I just had the same problem with my '89. It turned out to be a bad MAP sensor. It cost about $45.00. Good luck.

Don't guess, and don't throw part$ at it. Buy a Haynes manual and pull the codes from the engine computer (EEC). They'll point you in the right direction. Your truck will have 2-digit codes.

Several years ago, I had a problem with my '87 idling high. Turned out to be a gasket leak (can't remember which one), allowing the system to suck in air.

Yes Just fixed mine and was upper intake gasket leaking in air to give it a idle of 1500 warmed up.
Since it sat so long could be it. But would pull codes.
