Some considerations:

Ground Clearance, and specially rear clearance and length comes to mind
to long and forget going 4X4
Must have Off-Rod Tires
Most will have Tail Gates, this might solve your problem of a lack of a tailgate on the X
Weight, Steel or Aluminum
Purchase or Home Made

Some ideas, if you happen to be rich.. But the bed of a F250 would be AWESOME..would match the X on looks and height...
How's this for a camping/BOV trailer.

Started on the frame last week.

I cant believe the Excursion only has 8.3" of ground clearance. Heck, a Subaru outback has 8.7" I had to look it up to believe it. Larger tires are a definite must on the X to get that belly off the deck.

Yep...I had to look it up, too. Esp after my father-in-law laid into me about it when I gave him crap about wanting to take his outback onto the dunes at the cape. I felt stupid.
A mild lift and taller tires are in the table for next year fo' sho'. I'd like to get at least 10" of clearance at the suspension and then let the tires bump it over a foot. Should be adequate for just about anything I plan to encounter with it...obstacles other than that, nothing a chainsaw or change of direction can't fix.

Then your BOV isn't also your DD? If so don't you consider the risk of not being able to reach your BOV, home, or AOR cause you were caught unprepared too high?

To me that would be a primary reason to use an X as a BOV, that it can be a good DD as well. If the BOV is a dedicated vehicle then isn't there little reason not to go with something larger?

Again, just curious, you really seem to have your head in the game, I want to hear your thoughts.

If you really want to disquise your internet location....

Use Ipvanish it is < $10/mo but uses a vpn to a rotating ip block shared by all users for their internet requests.
Thus tracking sw can't determine who originated the actual requests.

Yes its my DD and BOV, in past they have all been DD, I get to spend more time doing mods and going thru it, You train the way you fight so you can fight the way you train....

I keep the gas tank full all the times, and the X its loaded with everything I need...
Since I work super near were I live its like I never really leave, so using it as a DD makes sense , My AOR is out of state so if SHTF while at work I have no plans to retun to my TLQ (temporary living quarters) I consider my apt at my work location. They wont find anything worth taking and it all came from the trash or craiglist free, they can have it..

Like I mentioned before I wanted SPACE and today the X gives you the space, brute force, DD and 4x4 capabilities...that said if my BOV would be a stand by vehicle I go bigger, brute and heavier...lest say an old mil truck or F650. Again , if your rich you can do anything..

One thing is for sure, when the SHTF there be plenty of stuff around....

Things do get old just sitting around thou so you should also drive the stand by, things get rotted specially rubber and fluids get old so you would need a good exercise plan for the stand by.

BTW, if you are on top of your X and keep good records, the chances of the X crapping out are minimum, just like any vehicle. I am not concerned on the X crapping out...there is always Plan B, but that's another story...

If you go through startpage and use their proxy there's no way of tracking as well. But you do have a few extra steps.
That being said if there was a 'thumbup" emoticon, it would be placed here, for you. Oh crack, there is, here ya go,.

Give me a minute to don my tinfoil hat...
...

...

Ok, ready.

I have done a bit of this myself, but have always revolved making my house my SHTF shelter, being self contained and not reliant on anything. This has come in handy for the 3-10 days we go without power every time a big storm hits. I have a few items that should apply to both a mobile and in home must have list.

Oil lanterns
Gallon of oil - provides at least 2 months of light
Pallet of wood pellets - even one bag at 40lb provides quite a bit of for a day, stays dry, can be used to dry and burn wet wood
Cans of tuna & can opener - Stuff has at least a year shelf life, probably more. It's cheap, doesn't take up much space
50lb bag rice - carbs are important to stay alive
Salt - Preservatives are always good.
Nesting doll style pots - 5+ pots in the space of one pot
Purifying tablets - purify questionable water for consumption/cooking
20lb propane w/heater & burner attachemnts
Striker to light propane
9pack of TP - Even when SHTF, we're still human... Also makes decent fire starter. Do not recommend using it for first purpose, then the second.
Handheld HAM radio - Yes you need a license to transmit, but not to listen. Can tune into NOAA as well as many emergency frequencies as well
CB Radio - Good 2-way medium distance communication. Have a mounted unit and a handheld.

All of these could be fit in a 20gal rubbermaid behind the 3rd row.

They're handy in the house because it's heated by a wood stove, which can boil water and prepare food, and oil lamps last a really long time. Then again I am jewish, so it's in my blood to stretch a day's worth of oil for over a week.

The idea of going mobile is a good idea if you can't stay home, but if you can, it's always a good idea, especially if you have a basement and second floor.
