Today we talk "Vehicle Survival Bag"

So I figure we break the ice on this by going thru some subjects,

Taking it by section we will start with "Saving our Vehicles",
won't spend too much time on vehicle maintenance, it seems most of us take care of our X very well. Based on some of the conversations it gives the impression some members are even mechanics (thou I can't find one) please add to the list.

I guess if the gods favor us we can then create a Sticky for it and in the future have a Medical Bag Kit, Lighting Bag Kit, Rescue Recovery Bag Kit and the rest with a sticky. It would also help any new guys or gals wanting to get in to the BOV and enhance our list as situations change.

The bag saves your vehicle. Just like your Medical Kit would saves you, Many of these tools can be expensive like Craftsman and some could even be from Harbor Freights. Always remember the law of "One is None, Two is One"

Based on my experience this is what I recommend and carry, I'm not a mechanic so take my effort for what it is, I have 2 bags 1 with hand tools another with the rest, please add salt to flavor and based on Gas or PSD!
I also keep any good parts I replaced as emergency spares, you never know.

"Vehicle Survival Bag 101"

(105pc)Tool Kit, with both Metric and SAE Wrenches and Sockets ( I have a Craftsman)

Knee Pads (saves your knees, trust me)
Eye Protection (I use a shield, saves your Blue Eyes, another one trust me)
Farm Jack (what new guys call a Hi Lift)
Bottle Jack or Pump Jack

(1) Tow Rope
(1) Fire Axe
(1) Fire Extinguisher, (HALON would be great but expensive make sure its A,B,C rated) Reminder it will create havoc with electrical components.

Books to Have on your Mobil Command Center

On another note for those who have computers or tablets on their X, one good idea is to have a library of useful books....including a set of service manuals if possible, see some I recommend. I also tend to carry criminal and traffic laws of those states I drive the most, just in case.

Be aware, you never know when these books could become CENSORED !

See the little green boxes under your join date, location, and post count total? Reps give you more green boxes, affectionately called "greenies."

Go to your User CP and scroll all the way down to "Latest Reputation Received" and you'll see what people say, if they choose to comment while giving you rep points.

Upper right hand corner to "give reps" (the HEART) no worries I was on this forum for five months before I was "instructed" properly.

A Little Bit About COMMS

(First the legal stuff, some of these will require a license (I don't get it, free open society?, but I know why they do it) Many can be modified to your taste (add salt as needed in this case wattage) some legally (whatever that means?) and some not. I any case, it is up to you and you alone what you decided to do. One thing is for sure, in my experience when there is an emergency no one will be asking many questions about a license or what you have as comms, they just want to help or need help, That said, Your an adult, choose wisely.)

So after much work on your BOV you have decided its time to take your X with a bunch of other light minded X's and hit the field to survive whatever the case might be that day, snow, flood, or uprising...
Your X's is loaded with gear, but your really proud of that 2,000$ you spent on that great sound system, with Dolby, XM radio, 16 speakers, 4,000 watts, WOW, then you realize one thing, no one is out there....no radio stations just static and no way to know whats going on..you have no COMMS...you need help, its a SHTF event, now what ?

Wish you spent the money in Tactical Communications...Yes, !!

Communications IMHO is based on the mission, I have divided these on 3, I love the number 3...This is what I had and I am currently adapting to my own X, since now I need a new way to have them all installed in the same place, my old brackets of my FJ and Jeep wont work. You don't need all of these, but as I always say, One is None and Two is One.

Prices on these devices will vary from 10$ to the ups of 2000$, The power wattage will vary from less of 1 watt to 2000 watts.

They will be available in Hand Held, Mobil and Base Stations.

(Enjoy the reading, and safe driving. And don't be shy, ask questions)

Short Distance (Person to Person, Vehicle to Person)
Medium Distance (Vehicle to Vehicle, Vehicle to Command Post)
Long Distance ( Cmd Post to Cmd.Post, Or Site to Site)

These can be accomplished in many ways some more expensive than others, lets look at some choices ..and definitions.

Short Distance -

The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) is in the 462 - 467 MHz spectrum range. The most common use of GMRS spectrum is short-distance, two-way communications using small, portable hand-held devices that function similar to walkie-talkies.

The Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS) is in the 151 – 154 MHz spectrum range. The most common use of MURS spectrum is short-distance, two-way communications using small, portable hand-held devices that function similar to walkie-talkies.

The Family Radio Service (FRS) is in the 462 - 467 MHz spectrum range UHF (ultra high frequency). The most common use for FRS spectrum is short-distance, two-way communications using small, portable hand-held devices that function similar to walkie-talkies.

Medium Distance -

Citizens Band - The Citizens Band (CB) Service is in the 26.965 – 27.405 MHz spectrum range or 11 meters. The most common use of CB spectrum is short-distance, two-way communications. This is available in AM, SSB (single side band). However a good CB can get you up to 20 miles.

Citizen Band – Export – Same as CB however (not FCC compliant), in addition to the 26.965 – 27.405 MHz spectrum, it will also include the 10mrt band (28.000mhz thru 28.500mhz ) with FM, CW, SSB Modes.

The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) will fit on this category if you have acess to a repeater, some are open, some will require the PLL / Tone Code.
Marine Radio – VHF- Marine (very high frequency), they wil also include the NOAA channels and some will even have PA (public address). 156.0 and 162.025 MHz.

Why ? You say on this one, if I need a line of sight with enough wattage to get out and or need privacy at short distance it works like a charm, however NEVER us it near bodies of water unless you acting as a shore to ship for your boat. I saved my boat sometime ago because I was able to direct the person who was on-board and using mine from my vehicle.

Long Distance – A word on these, as they can be used at short distances, I see these more as a true SHTF equipment, a license will be required if you decide to used them on a daily basis, however if you decide to get any of these and not have a license I recommend not to use it, unless its a SHTF event. I can say that in two events I did use a 20 meter and a 2 meter and once they understood what the issue was they assisted, then again that was overseas.

Privileges: All VHF/UHF Amateur bands(frequencies above 30 MHz).
Limited operations in certain HF bands.

The FCC Technician License exam covers basic regulations, operating practices and electronics theory, with a focus on VHF and UHF applications. Morse code is not required for this license.

With a Technician Class license, you will have all ham radio privileges above 30 MHz. These privileges include the very popular 2-meter band. Many Technician licensees enjoy using small (2 meter) hand-held radios to stay in touch with other hams in their area.

Technicians may operate FM voice, digital packet (computers), television, single-sideband voice and several other interesting modes. You can even make international radio contacts via satellites, using relatively simple station equipment. Technician licensees now also have additional privileges on certain HF frequencies. Technicians may also operate on the 80, 40 and 15 meter bands using CW, and on the 10 meter band using CW, voice and digital modes.

In addition to these I recommend you also have the following;
  1. Short Wave Radio
  2. Weather Radio with Alert
  3. A Wind Up AM/FM Radio
  4. A Digital/Trunking Scanner
  5. A Cell Phone Power Booster, A Wilson 5 watt or better
  6. A Weather Station
  7. Mikes for the Hand Held Radios
  8. Rechargeable Batteries with Solar Chargers
A word about ANTENNAS, Don,t be cheap, spend on a good antenna for your transmitters and receivers. A good radio with a cheap antenna is just as bad as a bad radio and no antenna.

Today we chat about, Emergency Lighting (Flares)

This could mean many things to many people, from flashlights to aerial flares. Here we will discuss the choices available for your BOV. I personally carry a variety of these, Why?

“One is None and Two is One”…

by having a variety of flares I can mix and match based on the emergency I can also improvise if I needed to. For example, if lost at night or wanted to create a diversion a Marine Flare is a great distraction.

If I need to be stealthy and wish to restrain from using my flashlight, a mouth Chemical Light makes a great map reading light and signal light at the same time.

Some other uses include fire starter, low light flash light, signal light, diversion, blinding night vision or infrared and many more uses.

You don’t have to invest on all of them, as a minimum have a dozen or so road flares, I can’t remember how many cases of these things I have used in my life, especially if you travel as much as I do. Nothing is more of a chick magnet than being prepared and showing off.

Since flares are, flammable I keep mine away from any sparks or fuel in their own container; marine flares already come in their own waterproof box. You can always use a medium size Tupper ware type of box and keep them all together. C clamps for ease of removal hold my electronic flares, since they glow Red or Green they serve dual purpose as low light flashlights and flares since they flash at the twist of the base.

Another good source is Dollar Tree, if you need chemical lights they have a good selection and cheap, I even found the small ones that fit in your mouth. I never had an issue with them and work just a good and last as long as the brand name ones, but for a fraction of the price.

As usual do not be shy, ask questions and Happy Glowing!
Maybe one day we can have an X Jamboree for the Mad Maxes of the forum and we can train, exchange ideas and help each other SURVIVE

Let us compare and see some pros and cons.

WARNING the dripping phosphorous and other chemicals put out by flares and smoke devices WILL burn your skin. DO NOT place 12 ga shotgun shells on your flare gun, unless you want to lose your hand and finally flares DO expire and tend to be funny when they go off, check all of your emergency flares at least once a year for dates and batteries.

Road Flares –
  • Flares operate in all environmental conditions – including adverse conditions like fog and snow.
  • Flares self-consume.
  • Are "self–contained”

Strobes and Electronic Flares –
  • Battery operated and dependent
  • Subject to breakage
  • Expensive and therefore must be retrieved
  • Not universally understood as an emergency signal

Aerial Flares –
  • Many of the same as Road Flares, But they fly!
  • Daytime or Nighttime conditions
  • Not weather-dependent
  • Launched at high altitude and seen from a long distance
  • As an inexpensive alternative to road flares
  • An expensive product when compared to all others

Chemical Lights –
  • At times not sufficiently bright
  • Useless in daytime
  • Weather-dependent (cold weather depresses output while warm weather depresses their duration)
  • Not understood as an emergency distress signal.
  • As an inexpensive alternative low light source, good only for non-emergency uses
  • An expensive product when compared to cost of a flare

I definitely recommend everyone takes a ham radio class.

also, firearms training. All you can get. It's worth the investment.

Reloading would be good as well.

A little Bit about MED BAGS...

(Legal Stuff, in no way I endorse you go and perform any aid unless you are properly trained, or performed by trained personnel. Thou it’s one thing to go buy the biggest kit you can find with the latest medical equipment and drugs, in no way it means you can use it or even possess it, That said check your local laws for your everyday use and carry. . I base IMHO my comments on my training as a Paramedic and Medical School and personal experiences, SHTF…well that another story.)

Today were talking about Medical Bags most commonly known as First Aid Kits. If you have a bag to save your truck, this is the bag to save your life the life of a loved one or even a stranger. Very much as the X Survival Bag, the Medical Bag has no strait forward list of items to have.

I am sure I will get a lot of lip from current or former EMTs and Paramedics, but in reality, things change only the basics remain the same, so as always add salt as needed.

The bag should meet your knowledge and training if possible, a few extra items will never hurt. I rather have it and not needed, than have trained personnel that can use it and not have it.

These bags come in 3 configurations…Yes the rule of 3.

1- Basic Life Support (First Aid Kit), Emergency procedures performed to sustain life that include cardiopulmonary resuscitation, control of bleeding, treatment of shock, stabilization of injuries and wounds, and first aid.

2- Intermediate Life Support, Set of life-saving protocols and skills that extend Basic Life Support to further support the circulation and provide an open airway and adequate ventilation (breathing).

3- Advance Life Support, Emergency medical care for sustaining life, including defibrillation, airway management, and drugs and medications. Typically, ALS includes invasive techniques such as IV therapy, intubation, and/or drug administration.

OK, so we have defined what the 3 are, now what do we need. My preference is that you can never have enough kits, I have one BLS on my loading vest, a larger BLS/ILS one on each vehicle and the X gets an ALS kit.

You ask why, you know my answer, One is None and Two is One, Yes you got it right.

Rule number 1, the BLS kit on my vest, is. Guess for whom, it is for ME, yes NEVER EVER share your personal BLS kit. Every member of your team will carry its own BLS kit to use on them. Second, you never know if you need to take another vehicle during your Bug Out, follow rule number one I just mentioned. Rule number 3, you can never have enough medical gear. TRUST me on this one. Also always, check you kits at least once a year to keep your supply fresh.

In a budget, no problem, Dollar Tree has plenty of items you will need on the cheap their Triple Anti-Biotic is awesome and most of the items they have work great, personal experience.

Do not forget you can use your medical savings account to purchase many of these items and look for coupons.

You also do not have to go and spend hundreds of dollars on fancy bags, any quality waterproof back bag or MOLLE bag will do, I personal have MOLLE bags with the exception of my ALS bag. This is whom I get mine from; I won this awesome bag when I was on the FJ form. If you get my favorite seat covers, you also get a few MOLLE bags with them.

Ford Excursion Ballistic Tactical MOLLE Custom Seat Covers Front Row | eBay

A few items not mentioned on the list are those you should already have;

(1) Stethoscope (get a quality one)
(1) Thermometer (seriously, you can get a digital one for a dollar)
(1) Blood Pressure Kit (digital is ok, but learn how to use an analog one, also called a Sphygmomanometer, say that 3 times real fast)
(1) ENT Kit ((Ear Nose and Throat) CVS calls it a Medical Light and Scope for a basic kit

Now a few words about training, YOU CAN NEVER TRAIN ENOUGH!

American Red Cross training is great and if you become an instructor some training is free, visit REI for more training, visit your local community college, practice on you, your kids get everyone in the wagon, and you just might be saving your own life.

To end on a pondering note, REMEMBER, Your BOV is not just a vehicle; it is your Mechanized Infantry Vehicle, Your Medical Ambulance, Your COMMS Truck, Your Transportation Unit. YOU BOV is your lifeline.

See list on the following post...Enjoy
