I have a 79 F250 that I would like to put a seat in from a 90's F-series. I owned a 94 F150 XLT and I really liked the seat that was in that truck. I know the seats from these years are interchangeable. I have a couple of questions about the swap for people that have done it.
First, does the 90's seat have the same height after installed? I would like to know if this changes my seating height.
Second, my truck rides horribly, just like driving a fork lift. Every time I hit a bump, I bounce of the seat more then anything else. I know the 90's seats are not as bouncy as my 79 seat, is that going to make my ride worse or better?
I'm worried if I put in the stiffer 90's seat then when I hit a bump in the road it will be a stiffer ride then it currently is. I also wonder if how bouncy my seat is just over exaggerates how my truck really does ride.
If any of you guys could give me some insight before I go out and buy a seat and have it re-upholstered, I'd really appreciate it.
I have a reupholstered '79 supercab split back seat in my '79 F250. The original seat was bouncy mostly because the spring were worn out and sagging. The new seat was redone with new springs and extra padding, so i dont bounce anymore.
I also redid my leaf spring bushings and that helped even more.
My F250 was bouncy/rode like a brick with the OE seat and worn out overload and main springs. I ditched the overload springs and replaced the original main springs with new original spec parts and the ride is great (for a PU). Same seat (with LMC cover).
I put a '95 in my '78 supercab and really lile it. Keep your old tracks and use them on the new seat, it does seem to sit higher but not really a big deal. I did not like the way the headrest looked so I took them out and put a seat cover on it until I can get it re-upolstered.
I put a bench seat from a '97 in my '77. The new seat is softer, and a lot less bouncy then the stock seat. It sits a little bit lower then the old seat as well. I really like having a fold down armrest, lumbar, and cupholders
jswartz, I'm jealous right now, I defiantly miss my 94's seat when driving this truck for sure.
I haven't seen anything wrong with my springs, but that's not to say they're good either. The truck has a 4 inch lift that was installed probably about 5 years ago with an add a leaf in the rear.
How could I find out if they are worn out? I've been around the truck since the late 90's and it has always rode like crap. I believe some of my problem is when going over a rough spot in the road the back of the seat will rattle back and forth. If I push backwards into the seat while hitting a bump it won't do that and will feel smoother.
Two years ago, I replaced my 74 F350s split open factory seat, with a gray cloth seat from a 96 F250. As mentioned, the seat bolted right in, by using the seat tracks from my old seat. The new seat has adjustable/removable head rests, looks good, is comfortable, and as a bonus, it has a cupholder in the middle.
