Im needing to replace my fuel cell on my 1965 F100. It is a bed mounted tank. I do not have the original fuel cell. My question to you experienced guys is....What fuel cell location would you prefer in my situation. Go back to the original location behind the seat, after market fuel cell in the bed or a fuel cell between the frame rails in the rear of the truck???
ThanksMark
Has the hole in the cab for the fuel filler been covered? Unless you are trying to return to a stock condition, it would be less work to replace what you have. The in-cab tank has a vented gas cap, which will leak if overfilled or parked on an angle. That last bit of gas may help, if you are getting 10 mpg like I do.
What size of tank (gallons and measerment ) are you thinking about using. I too like the idea of moving it to the rear between the frame rails but Im wanting something around the 22-25 gallon capacity. Is that feasable???

If it's not available, look into boat tanks, they have a pretty large selection of sizes. ANd they are generally aluminum which is a plus.
What a dilemma, in my view if the space in the cab can not be put to good use; i.e., air condition unit, stereo system, etc. then I would probably install the tank in the cab. Safety has never been an issue for me but there are couple inconveniences of having the tank located in the cab, one being never want to top off the tank, the odor can be annoying; the other issue is not having to deal w/ welding in a patch. Topic came up fairly recently where member posted pic's of project where he welded in a patch for the filler neck opening and it came out looking very good. There would be the additional cost of purchasing the filler neck, the hose between tank and filler neck, the gasket for the filler neck at the cab opeining, and the fuel sending unit, estimate will run up to couple hundred $'s.
For me to decide whether to keep the tank in the bed would depend on where the filler neck is located, if coming up the middle of the bed then I would have to decide whether it would be too labor intensive to relocate the filler neck on the replacement tank. I bookmared pic's of member's project where he placed the filler neck in the driver's side taillight on the a styleside bed, looked great and member made it sound easier project than one would have imagined. Have seen pic's where member had the filler neck coming up the top of the styleside bed rail w/ a door, and similar coming out the side of the styleside bed with a door. Kinda wish I was faced w/ that dilemma, would be interested what I would do, I drive the 65 at least 3-4 times a week so air and decent stereo may be something I may want to consider, but it's also the family work horse?? Anyhow, had an urge to chime in and add my $.02, if nothing else food for thought??
I was looking at the early Mustang tanks , a few people have used them and they are at least DOT legal unlike a boat tank or homemade tank and have the filler and sender locations already
Im leaning toward getting the aftermarket tank boiled out and mounting it in the bed again. Is getting tanks boiled out and sealed work out ok or should I just get a new tank. The cost to get my old tank cleaned and sealed is $170.
if you don't wanna hassle with doing a under the bed install a buddy of mine made his own set up with 2 separate racing fuel cells in an aluminum diamond plate tool box behind the cab with a switch to change between tanks since one ran regular unleaded and other ran race fuel (coupled with electronic exhaust cutouts made an awesome sleeper truck) its discreet and as long as you bolt it to your bed its safe lol plus a little extra cool factor when your filling the tank
the 1965 mustang 16 gallon tank kit is less than 170.00 from cjponyparts , the 68 20 gallon is just a little more and more than a few people have used them , I will probably go with the 16 gallon mustang tank on my 66 f100
