I have an 86 F150 EFI 302. I tried to start it this evening and it started for a second but then shut off. I tried repeatedly to start it but nothing. It is getting gas as it smelled like it was flooded. The motor turned over but mad some strange noises like it was turning really fast and then normal. I am guessing it is a spark issue as it was getting gas but I would like some other opinions. Please help because the truck is at my parent's house 30 miles away and it is not convenient to keep trying different things.
Is it turning over or is it just the starter spinning?
Have someone crank it and look at the fan blade. My guess is the bendix gear in the starter is not letting it engage the engine and the starter is just spinning.
That's just a guess with no other info. Checking to make sure the engine is really turning over is step one
Check for spark. Take a sparkplug wire off, stick a screwdriver up in the end of the wire, and then hold it by the plastic handle, and hold the metal part really close to something metal on the engine. When the engine is cranked, you should see a spark. If you have spark, I would put the plug back in, hook the wire back up, and then get in and hold the gas pedal to the floor and crank it and see if it tries to start. It may be flooded. Holding the pedal to the floor on the fuel injected vehicle will turn the fuel injectors off and help clear it out.
Franklin2, I tried holding the pedal down but it did not act any different than without the pedal to the floor. It just cranked and cranked. I will look for spark. If there is no spark what should I try next?
KsCop, It definitely has fuel. That is all I could smell.
Thank you for the help. I really appreciate it. I did not know where to start.
No spark, I would take the ignition module off the dist and see if the store will test it. Or just try another one and see what happens. You could also pull the codes and see if they say anything. Here's how to do it.
