Started the wifes 01 Explorer and it started fine - turned it off to check the oil and antifreeze (both ok)and tried to start it again, and it won't start, not even a stumble. Fuel pumps hummming and I pulled the spark plug and installed another one and checked for spark, and I have spark. What to check next.

Try to start it with gas pedal half-way down, or more. If it starts, let the gas pedal up and then if it quits with no pressure on the pedal, the IAC (idle air control) valve is carboned up and needs to be cleaned. This happened to me in my '91 on several occasions. If this is the case let me know and I'll elaborate on how to do it - it's easy.
If it doesn't start with the gas pedal half-way down, well ya got me.
I need to double check this on my '99, but if it's the same as my '92, there is a solenoid between the battery and the starter. The cable that runs from this solenoid down to the starter went bad on my '92. It presented the same way. Started fine one moment, then went to start it a little while later, and nothing. Not even a click at the starter.
Thanx for the replies.
Its the v6 with 150k.
Got fruststrated and mashed the pedal to the floor and it stumbled back to life. Let it run for a little while and cleared it out a bit. Shut it down and tried to strt it again and had to floor it again.
Took it out to run some arronds and make sure it wouldnt die on the Boss and it started fine everytime.
I think it was just flooded some how. I didnt know you could floor it on a fuel injected motor to clear out a flood likr you can a carberated motor.
She seems to think its down on power but I never drive it so I cant really tell.

Certainly can't hurt to pull and clean that IAC valve. Sounds to me like the valve might have been stuck shut. Let me know if you don't have a shop manual.
Be warned though that if the valve is going bad it could be a costly fix. NOT CHEAP. But yeah it does seem to be the IAC. Easy clean but if it goes bad be wary.
AussieAahz69... The IAC from Autozone is only $99.... and is really easy to replace. Remove the shroud from the top of the motor, and there it is. Couple of screws, and it comes off. If you got dinged for a lot, then unfortunatly you got ripped off. I replaced the IAC on my 99 a couple years ago. Did it in a campground in under 30 minutes.... and that included diging around for the tools.
Thanx. Ive got a shop manual. Ill have to do that. I like cheap fixes
I used carb cleaner spray to clean mine out on a few different occasions. Seems like after about 140k I've had to do it every 20-25000 miles or so. Too easy to get at to ignore.
Clean it, or replace it, and let us know what happens.
Some vehicles are very expensive though. Just warning him is all. If that is all for this one then that's a good price. I had to get one for a Honda Accord and it cost $259.00. Like I said some are not cheep. But yeah I don't mean to say they are hard to fix. They are easy.
You are in Colorado. Any chance you have water in the fuel filter and it iced up?? If it were a bad IAC sensor, I would think you would have thrown a code. They also sound like loud clothes drier when they get dirty.
